Tool Question - palm sander?!?

Ok...I am not what you would call a tool person (I am not very handy, but I like to try).

My inlaws have some nice pieces of furniture they are going to give my wife and I. One of them is a nice sofa table. It is very simple (kind of boxy), but it is all solid wood and has wonderful grain to it. Problem is it has a very dark (opaque) mahogony stain on it. I want to take all the stain off (my father-in-law already sanded a very small portion by hand just to see what the grain looked like).

Ok, here is the question...I want to sand the stain off and I am wondering what is the best tool. Should I get a little palm sander? Should I do it by hand? If I get a palm sander what kind should I get (keep in mind I do not want to spend a fortune on a sander)?

Thanks all...I know there are some really good woodworkers here so I look forward to your answers.

If you get a palm sander you want a radom orbital. Some you'll need to do by hand . #000 steel wool can help by itself and/or liquid stripper.

The first thing I would do is get some paint and varnish remover , take off what you can with that, Then use bleach to help take it out and finish with a sander and steelwool. to do all the work with a sander is to hard. Hand sander are cheap for the most part, I like dewalts tools myself

How do you use the varnish remover? Do you apply it and then scrape it off? What do you scrape it with?

What is the bleach for?

I would suggest getting a random orbital sander. You can get one for like $30-$40 and will be worth every penny.

Stain and varnish remover has the directions on the bottle. Don't use a metal scraper get a plastic one. Metal can dig grooves into the wood. Just follw the directions.

I have that exact (5" Firestorm) sander and I love it. You can litterly cut away wood with it. That is a deff. must for any DIY wood projects.

The beach will help get some of the deep stain out. We did it on antique furniture all the time, just leaves the natural wood color. I used to own an antique store and redid furniture all the time,

So just rub the bleach on, let it sit for a while (how long)?

And...do I dilute it??

it is just a stain on the wood right no poly?
i have a sofa that sounds the same.
the orbital sander after the bleaching will do a great job. like vince, i often soak pieces of furniture in vats of bleach water to raise the grain and remove some of the stain. because of the mah. stain ( hopefully ) it was not the very dark one. you may not get all of it out with out sanding a lot off.
when you get the sander buy the larger pack of sanding disc's no need for the 60 or 80 grit, that will tear up too much wood.
if you are thinking of staining it again. stain a spot that cannot be seen at all 1st!
this way you can see what it will look like if you cannot get all the dark staining out..
got any pics of the piece you are working on?
