So our water bill has been a little high lately...

I am very frustrated right now and need to vent. Thanks in advance for listening!

Our water bill has always been around $30-$35. Back in May our bill doubled and has slowly risen ever since. Being that there is just me & my wife and we haven't changed anything as far as water use we just knew the water company was trying to screw us. Well after repeated calls to the city, constantly checking the meter, and looking for leaks I have finally found the problem.

When I bought my RO/DI unit back in Dec 05' I ordered the storage tank and sink faucet to go with it so we could also use it for drinking water. So the unit basically stays charged with water 24/7. Well, after running a series of tests and a couple of phone calls to Filter Direct we determine that the waste line has a slow steady stream of water flowing NON-STOP, even with the flow restrictor valve in the off position. Evidently the auto-shut-off valve that is supposed to detect back pressure has gone bad and allowed water to bypass SINCE MAY!!! Come to find out Filter Direct has had some problems with their auto-shut-off valves and have started using a different type. They are sending me a new one out now.

Our water bill was an average of $40 above normal. So let's see... 40x8=$320!!! Needless to say I won't be reimbursed for any of the money, but it made me feel better to ask... until he laughed at me.

That stinks!!!!!

The other thing about RO/DI units is that they take 4 gallons of water to make one gallon of water.

I get my water for free, I couldn't be happier

Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum. I guess I figured since just about everyone runs an RO/DI unit (or is at least told to), that they might want to check and make sure their's is working properly.

My waste water goes into a basement sink, in "plain" view.
Any runoff is seen during the winter

In the summer it waters my garden. I have a permeate pump that makes a funny noise in the basement when it is running. So we pretty much know when the water is "on"

Sucks to find that out after 8 months
Nice that they laugh at you, I wonder what the law is regarding defective products. Very poor support that they knew they had a problem and made no attempt to contact people?

It was more of a nervous laugh. I'm sure he was thinking, "I sure hope this guy doesn't make an issue out of this." But your right about the faulty equipment. Maybe they could have handled it like a recall on a car and send everyone with that certain model a flyer about it.

Anyways, can't change the past. Live & learn.

Now that's an idea! My WB last summer hit ~$120/month. Don't ask about the gas.

At least you have something to show and use for your money. My last one was $74.00 and I still don't have anywhere to swim!
