Ok read the article about the reef where they are inducing electrical current and it is having dramatic effects.... Well let me tell you a thing or 2 about that!
Inducing electrical current into a coral reef DOES in fact have DRAMATIC effects!!!
Note and Case study:
I am going to do a bit of experimenting myself with this new found science
I went home and grabbed my beloveds nightstand light her grandmother gave her. It was small, cheap and looked like it would fit in the nano tank..
Well I was out of electical outlets on the powerstrip so off to the hardware store. Being sunday evening, they were closed but the little appliance shop across the street had a light on..
I prance into his shop and asked if he had any electrical extension cords.. Well kiddo, all I got is this 240 to 120 adapter and cord, will make you a sweet deal on it being sunday an all. Figuring that the 240 circuit had a bigger breaker anyway, this would most likely work better than some whimpy 120 outlet anyway.. I fork over $22 bucks for the thing and head for home.
Well I get home and dang if the cord still wont reach my 20 gallon nano.. Well silly me the thing is on wheels already. So off to the laundry with the tank in tow.
Well after some careful thought it occurs to me that this might be a bad idea as it could hurt my $3
damsel fish. The $500 worth of coral was going to grow so fast and be so dang colorful it might scare the bejesus out of freida (thats my damsels name)
So another great idea.. I mix about 25gallons of saltwater into the washing machine drum. Dang thing works great! stirred itself and everything! cool. So I let it run for about 5 mins to aireate the water and pull the plug, (need that outlet for test anyway)
So we got nano tank by the door, lid pried off and my new cord, grannys lamp and one fish safe out of harms way.
I plug in the cord, the lamp and then test the lamp.. works great, but one thing? do I take the bulb out or leave it in? after some careful consideration, I remove the bulb, after all we dont want to add any glass or extra heat to this equation..
Ok unplug cord (safety first) unscrew lightbulb, plug cord back in and turn on lamp.. I am sure there is power there and I already got suckered into the "just touch it with your tonge" trick before HAHA I aint stupid....
Well all I gotta do is give the lamp a push into the tank and watch my coral take off and grow like mad!
SPLASH!
Well things kinda did take off from there, Dang coral lit up like no ones business and then all the dang lights went out.. water was flying out of the tank (i guess the coral grew so fast it pushed the water out) and I had to climb over the tank to get out of laundry to get check fuse box... dang if I didnt knock the stupid thing over, could not see so good as all the lights were out so down to the basement to fix fuse first off. Well it took like 20 resets of the circuit breaker before it would quit kicking off. (later figured out I shoulda unplugged the cord from lamp huh?)
Went back up stairs and things didnt look so good, but it sure did look like a lot more coral than when I started (spread out all over the floor like that it was easy to inventory too)
So my tank is broke and worse yet, grannys stupid lamp is toast, boy is my old lady gonna be pissed about that one.
Well I got her cooking pots out of every where I could find them and made more seawater so I could save my stuff till the walmart opens in the morning and I can get another new nano tank.
Kitchen looks like a hobby shop now. 18 assorted pots with rocks and frilly mushrooms everywhere.. then the real trouble started. She got home... utoh... well she did pretty dang good considering, she was more upset about my in ground pool idea (blasting holes is faster than diggen I figgerd)
Any way she went to do laundy and of course the dang machine was still unplugged, well she aint no dummy and plugged it in herself, when the thing started the agitate cycle, she figured there must be laundry in there and let it go..... oooops Now she is really pissed, that was her favorite fish.
She says I gotta pick a new hobby now.. anyone here know a thing about snakes??
