saving for retirement

Can anyone help push me in the right direction for saving money for retirement? I think I can open a 401K plan by myself right? And then roll that over into a 401K that my employer gives me?

What other options are good for saving towards retirement?

401k's have to be through your employer. You can do an IRA on your own.

Use the plan my step father used. 5 gallon buckets full of Canadian Maple leafs and Krugerrands, bank bags of 1oz silver ingots and 1941 dimes along with several deposit bags of large bills spread throughout the house. Then vacuum the rug to see if anyone leaves footprints. Move it all every few months. Use central heating ducts, attics, furniture and walls as hiding places.

IRA is a good start but you may want to simply look into investing into some good stable stocks and bonds. if you buy and hold it will appreciate without taxes as well until you sell. if you do 401k then i recommend that you make sure to diversify into 3 different sectors. usually bonds, stocks, and treasury bills is a good idea.

she has always told me "rip the walls apart when I die"
at first I thought she was joking around

now I take her serious
