I do not like a stapler. I use a nailer since staples tend to go to deep or do not hold as well. IMO

same my father and i just did our roof as well we used 2 nail guns i think our code here in mi has changed so we are not allowed to use staples we have to use nails that go threw the roof and a 9x9 section took about 2 or 3 rolls of nails if that helpsabout 3 nails may be 4 per set of shingle.

Interesting, 1" staples are pretty standard here, what type nail do you guys use? all the gun nails I saw have small heads. I can definatly see the advantage of being able to use nail gun, as the stapler has pretty limited use unless you do a lot of roofing, plus the fact that they only had a 10K ct box, so i am going to have a LOT of staples left over

well you can rent a roofing nail gun just get it done as fast as you can it goes so much faster with 2 people 1 puting the shingles down and one nailing thme in at one point we had 5 people on out roof nailing and setting them up we did a 35 by 16 section of the roof with only 3 people and 1 gun in about 45 minuts its definatly nice having the nail gun btw the part o the roof that took about 45 min was almost flat may be a 15 degree slope. good luck though and i think the nails you can buyy by the roll

Well next time I will just hire it done, the rented airtool was a POS, the shingles varied in width from package to package, so I have to restablish a straight line and hand nail, the prep work I didnt have a chance to do before the weekend chewed up a lot more time than I planned and now my helpers have gone, its gonna be a long sucky day, anyone need 9900 staples for a Senco PW?

No advice here. I did take out a jillion nails at the restaurant though and used screws with the rubber washers to hold the metal roof down.
I saw on This Old House a couple of days ago the roofers using hammers and nails old school and they looked like they knew what they were doing laying the asphalt tiles. It was on PBS though so it could have been a rerun from 1974 or something.
