Well what are you looking at getting? I have had iguana's (wouldn't recomend to anyone), bearded dragons (great first lizard), Uromastyx (much like a bearded dragon but ugly as sin) and my all time favorite leopard geckos.
As far as reptile forums go I think I belong to about everyone out there. Information wise my favorite is http://www.herpworld.com/

Hey TIm,
what type are you thinking about. does it have to be a lizard?
i have a few links.if ya want them. for snakes i like kingsnake.com .
here is care sheets on a bunch for ya too..
I have 3 snakes, 2 turtles, an rather larger female Iggy ( 3-4 foot long) and have had many more lizards ( including monitors) through the years..

My vote is for Leopard Geckoes, Tim. They are easy to keep and are actually affectionate....love to have their tummies rubbed! They aren't herbivores; mine prefer live crickets, but that's no big deal.
Our pair, Crystal & Nicholas.

gecko's are cricket eaters, much easier to keep then herbivores. but if you want a salad eater. bearded dragons are some of the best. if you want something a little cooler, (more expensive) check out and argentine black and white tegu, super cool lizard, gets big. and acts like a puppy. blue tongue skinks are cool too. stay away from the wall walking geckos (especially tokays) if you want something to play with.

One of the best things about leopard geckos is the fact that they don't require UV lighting or huge cages.

another vote for dragons... make sure you get a few to keep them happy. females would do best. they have attitude but never bite and don't poop outside of the cage. they are cheap to keep too. otherwise look at the gecko's or turtles (box turtle is easy).

oh tim, dont forget a savanah monitor, or other small monitor species. only have to feed a rat once a week, and a few crickets every couple days. super great pets. like platypus said.
