Funny thing is, this was a golf course until an F4 tornado came through here on May 4, 1977.

Water hazard I think was at the bottom of the hill from us. They can't get water to drain for anything down there.
Our rain garden is starting to grow a bit faster than I had realized, although a bunch of it is getting beat up by the winds lately. The large amounts of rain lately is causing the mulch to float and cover up the smaller plants. I marked those plants so I can find them easily and get them uncovered. Hopefully in a couple more weeks, those plants will be larger too!

We got the pole for the bluebird house today. We have had more than 5" of rain in the last couple of days and I didn't hit water with the post hole digger until I was almost 2.5' down. The dirt was even dry until I was almost 2'. This soil really drains well.

Is that going to breed skeeters? Does a lot of water movement discourage that?

They are not supposed to hold water long enough for skeeters to breed

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Right again! The garden, under normal rain, will drain about 4" of water in just a few hours.

I'm answering all the questions about your new toy I get all excited about landscaping projects Sometimes I think I should have taken the money I spent on graduate school and just opened a landscaping business. But I didn't want to open one in the same town as the guy that taught me to do it.

I really liked my landscaping job. It was a good 5 years. Life long lesson. I still like to do it and it has been about 20 years.

I'll do that. We just had a bluebird show up in the last hour. I'll see about a few pics tomorrow.

Kids wouldn't stay away from the area and scared to bluebird off. Hopefully we will get another one soon.

This really is an interesting thread, Eric. That might work in some areas of my yared. The Upstate of SC has red clay eath rather than useful dark soil.

Some irises are like that, Doug. But I found out the hard way that my irises don't like wet feet. But I bet my Stella D'oro would like it, and there's a spout very near them. Maybe ai could make a mini-rain garden.

We've had crazy amounts of rain lately and the garden has suddenly taken off. Wind broke a few of the plants a few weeks back but they are recovering nicely now. Looks like I should finally have some blooms in the next few days. I'll get some updated photos up once that happens.
We also have a pair of nesting bluebirds. Two eggs in the nest as of this morning.
