Question for the Fishing Gurus

Once a year I take the family on a deep sea fishing trip. Yes, we're forced to go on one of those party boats! Ugh! The last couple times that we've gone, the fishing was lousey. There's a full moon coming up in about a week and I was wondering if it had any effect, good or bad, on fishing. Anyone?

Where are you planning on going fishing at and plan on going soon?

It is going to be lousey anytime soon becasue of the heat and the water is going to be to hot.

You can discuss and or argue until the cows come home on whether or not fishing is better or worse on or around a full moon. Like with most things, the guides and fisherman who know what they are doing are going to catch fish regardless of what the weather or moon is doing. I know as far as steelheading goes i personally like it when the sun is on the water, most of those hardcore swing monkeys are off the water and and out of my favorite holes and the fish ARE more likely to take my mooseturd floating high and dry......OR my other flies as long as theyre out of my hole...haha.......many people believe you cant catch steelhead when the sun is on the water.........(theyre RIGHT you CANT!!!) anyways.......

Here is one thing that IS fact.

When the moon is out to any degree, and more so when full, fish eat all night long so not only does it decrease and or eliminate the "morning" bite, it gives them that much more time to feed in days time so their aggressiveness to bite can be lessened.

I fish whether work or for pleasure 1-200 days a year, although saltwater usually is only a couple weeks or so of it every year, depending on the year, so im not going to say I know all about saltwater fishing. I would THINK that deep sea fishing the moon would matter less than more however. Just my .02...i know in the saltwater fishing that i do......which is usually for permit, bonefish, jacks, and tarpon down south of Punta Allen, i have never noticed the moon affect it very much. I however do not know enough about deep see fishing to disagree with someone who does.

The extent of my deep see fishing in tropical water(maybe 40 feet of water) entailed chumming sierras and barracuda up to the top so i could hook them with a fly.............(SHHHHHHH dont tell anybody) That was my first trip down to southern mexico and my guide looked at me like i was a moron....and looked at my rods and continued to look at me with confusion as to why i felt the need to do this with a fly rod........lol

I have been deep sea fishing probably a couple of hundred times in the last 20 years and no one really brought this up. Of course on the Pacific Coast the entire thing is based on water temperature where the surface bite is all about warm water and the tuna and yellowtail coming up from Mexico.

Warm water where I fished was 70 btw probably tops.

I know that we're usually in 300 feet of water fishing for cod and haddock.

Ok I have learned not to fish on a full moon. Fishing is also best around high tide with a new moon (when it's dark out at night with no moon). If you goto seatows web site http://www.seatowftl.com/southeast_fsh.php3 they have a tide charts, weather, and fishing. Are you coming down? also if you are going out for the day aren't there charter boats that go out up there? I know they are pricey like 500-600 for the day but your not on the boat with 40 other people just a thought.

Fly guy that is a nice permit. not for nothing but I dont get the fly rod either. LOL

I LOVE charter boats, but I've only been on them with "the guys". They only fish for blues, which most people(my family included) won't eat. LOTS of fun to catch though!! Unfortunatly I'm stuck on the line tangling party boat, with the idiot at the end of the boat that knows more about fishing than ANYONE! I had one guy keep cutting my son's line one time (until I caught him).

I love fishing in the Keys. A friend of the family has a house in Tavener key. me, dad, and two uncles and the family friend went out one day a caught 33 mahi-mahi all between 8 - 15 lbs what a great day not to mention the amount of beer we drank.

Fishing in broward county (Ft. Lauderdale) is OK but it can be hit or miss.

I don't know about that I have had a five to six foot sail fish jerk me form the forward part of the cock pit to the aft with out evern trying hard. twenty minutes later he was being revived beside the boat. there is no fight like a bill fish. I want for my next conquest to be for black or blue marlin in Belize or Costa Rica.

Not to discredit northern fresh water fish (after all I am a transplanted new yorker) It's just a different kind of fishing.
