I don't know , both my kids have XP on their puters, but then one has AOL and the other MSN browsers. Being old and set in my ways I resist change and am mistrusful of " new and improved"

If you upgrade to XP, upgrade to the Professional version. The Home Edition is MS's verson of red headed stepchildren that get beaten with rusty metal hangers. Professional just gives you a lot more control over your computer and files like encryption if you want it.
Don't forget to upgrade the security patches.

Yep security patches... good idea and since your upgrading LOL.. go ahead and get rid of dial up.. go ahead and buy yourself a linksys router and a cable modem and for about $6 more than what you pay for AOL you can be on high speed internet and you will never go back to dial up again..

I agree. Windows XP Professional is pretty much standard issue these days and supported everyplace.
Me and 98 sort of just came and went and are not being supported by a lot of programs anymore.
Also, it appears to be the least problem free but that is my subjective opinion having lived through all the other versions.

I have very few problems with XP pro,a few with the home version.A lot of times the OS has problems running some of the games I play, but XP pro seems to handle them all pretty well.

That upgrde will cost a little more ,
Selling my home in the country, buying a place in town, and buying a new puter with improved OS
Out here DSL or cable is not an option, I have Directv but they want an arm and a leg for sat net service and there are too many issues for the money, based on friends that use it.
One of my biggest gripes is Companies that offer outlandish deals for new customers, ie free 4 room hookup and almost free hardware for sat internet if you sign up. Well guess what, if you have been with them over 9 yrs like myself, they know they got you by the ***** and there aint no good deals like that for existing customers

Hey Doug, are you using a local ISP? I live out in the wilds of Maryland, any phone calls outside the exchange number are long distance or toll calls so AOL and MSN are out because they don't have a local number here. We have cable, but cable internet service is TOO much money.
Depending on how close you are to your telephone company's stations, you might ask them if they offer ISDN wich will work on your pre-existing telephone wiring. You will need some special equipment for you computer (they should provide), but you can be on the computer and on the phone at the same time.
We us a local ISP. We pay for 6 months of service at a time, we can choose the level of service like 15 hours a week, 40 hours a week, etc... which is kind of cool for us since we don't use the internet every night, why pay for what you're not using right? I've used AOL and MSN before, and usually couldn't connect higher than 40k, we usually connect to the local ISP at 48 to 52k. The ISP is now offering satelite service, which still requires a telephone line like your DirectTV set up does. It's a little more than what we're already paying, so I think we're stuck with dial up.
