this is gonna sound stupid, but on mythbusters, they addressed that one. and come to find out. tailgate up is better. with the tailgate up, it creates a pattern of air, that acts as a cushion forcing more air over the tailgate. with it down, the cushion wasnt there, and the air comming over the cab pressed down on the bed, causing the truck to run like it was carrying a heavy load. but like mentioned above. im sure all are different.

LOL

That episode of Mythbusters is on right now. As Andy stated what they determined was tailgate down was actually the worst.

Yup. Mythbusters did this a 2nd time with a sophisticated flow meter to accurately measure the gas used

Tailgate down - 4% worse
Tailgate up OR Bed hard cover - Better
Mesh in place of tailgate - tailgate was removed - 5% better

Read the same in a car rag a few years back...leave it up.

Besides I don't want your leftover Taco Bell trash flying out of there and hitting me behind me.

Well that may be true for that truck on myth busters but more and less you have to do a test for your own truck.

I get about 2 miles more per gallon highway tailgate down.

Tail gate up , and box covered . (Pace Edwards- roll top), When i got the the roll top cover installed, i check b4 /after mileage,,,THey were right , got close to 10% better mileage with the cover on. And the truck seems to ride a lot better without the open box to add turbulance.
THe up/down stuff i had heard a while back was, it really made no difference, up or down, what did help was to cover the box however, had something to do about the air getting in the box, and adding turbulance blowing around in the box,,and like i said, i can notice a difference in the ride, with the roll top open , or closed
