i seems to remember..... the former first lady, now senator from new york, who gave a trader $1000, and at the end of the day she had $100,000. but somehow that was legal........

It seems to me that going back and doing the research on stocks 253 years old would be a real pain. And why would you pick a time when the market was bad? Wouldn't it have been a whole lot easier to do, and hide, in a boom period like the 90's? I mean look at all the IPO's that went through the roof (only to settle back down to earth, or go bust) over the last 10 years. Consider what he could have made over the years with a real time machine and $800 with names like:
Microsoft
CocaCola
Cisco
Intel
AOL
...
And if you were selling short...
Enron
Worldcom
...
