Praying Mantis' in Oregon?????????
Got a nice little surprise last night while picking off dead flowers! I think it's a praying mantis!!!!!! Here are a couple pics. What do you think? Is this a loose pet or are they common in our area? I live down by Blue Lake Park in Fairview Oregon. Either way...really creeps out my wife!!!!!

I have read lb for lb they are the most fierce preditor on the earth. Imagin meaner and tougher that say a Bengal Tiger. WOW how bout a 10 Lb Praying Mantis. As far as being native here I dont have a clue I kow in the midwest where I used to live they were common but this is the first I have heard of them in the PNW. I think they are cool I would provide him with bugs to eat just to watch it but im weird that way too..

Yup! They're natives all right; I caught one in my kitchen just the other night, he flew in through the back door. We have Walking Sticks, too, you just don't see either of them very often as they camoflauge so well.
The kids put the mantis in a bug house for a while so we could watch it eat. They strike fast and then bite their victims' little heads right off. (Don't let your wife see that, LOL)

Yep It is a praying mantis.. Back home in Tulsa had them all over.. Best thing you could ever ask for.. They can even take on a black widow spider and win.. Their mating practice is a little rough on the male though..

We have the smaller brownish ones down here, and sometimes the green ones. Not real common but not rare either.
Their mating rituals are interesting, but reminiscent of the Amazon's culture and treatment of captive males

they give me the creeps and i wish i could get over that. i have many in the yard. At one time i removed a cover on a lawn chair and a complete family came out. Really gives me the willies. For me they're right up there with those big Florida roaches.
