I found this guy this morning while watering a hibiscus. In the past I've had trouble with Japanese beetles on this plant but not lately. I'm hoping the mantis is the reason.

I'll bet he is the reason, Rick. He found a good hunting ground!
Oh, and btw; those aren't "roaches" those are "Palmetto Bugs."

The little brown ones are very mellow, at least around people, my grandson handles them and never been pinched or bitten. They really are kewl predators

Ive seen one at my plant site that was about 8" long and its abdomen(sp) was as thick as my thumb. When I picked it up from behing, it reached over its head and tried to judo flip me by my thumb. Needless to say, I let it go
Bugs at my plant seem to be way larger than around my house. Hmmmmm.........

When I was younger living in MD, they were all over the place. My friends and I put a brown one (male) and a green one (female) together. Came out the next day and only half of the brown one was there! I guess he died a happy man!!

Hey! Thats the same one that tried to flip me!
Really, it looks to be about the same size.
Alice, Our plant makes Technical resins, aka expensive plastic. We have some bugs that you would freak if you saw. Do you guys know what a helgramite is? I think thats how you spell it.

hesaias
yep i know what a helgramite is they sound like mini helicopters when we go fishin down the river i catch them all the time the fish love em and you never know what you will catch on them. my husband used one and got a 26 1/2" fresh water eel, caught quite a few catfish, walley, carp on them also, even the trout like the small ones. caught a trout that had a small one in its mouth i pulled the helgramit out (still alive) and caught 3 more with it. the larva you cant kill for nothin there catapillars with armor. try one bass fishin you have a good time catchin lots of them also

ya the larvae are the catapillar looking things in the water. they can bite with those jaws when they get a hold will draw blood. they are also called the datsun fly. the top picture looks like a female you can tell by the size of the pinchers. the females are shorter where the males can have pinchers over an inch long and a little nastier looking with those long jaws.
