AVG is easy to delete from the system...would you consider loading it, running it, and then deleting the program? I could very well be barking up the wrong tree, though.

Would I need to turn off Norton first? (disable Norton) Yes, I'd consider doing that. I edited my post above... fyi

turn off Nortons.. and then install and run AVG .. it is way better then anything out there .. it catches stuff right away .. you will probably want to get rid of Nortons and jsut keep AVG.. and the free one is just as good ..

I just ran the virus cleaner from AVG that the FAQ said to run before installing the trial version. It found nothing... I haven't installed the trial version yet... I'm wondering if this is something I may have messed up and not a virus... ???

It's not necessarily a virus or a worm that is your problem, but if it is, AVG is a good bet to catch it.

Back up your data files, shut down the system, insert the disk from the win XP, and let it take you through a repair, I'd bet there are issues with the registry. After running this and making sure that you don;t need to reinstall your data files, go to This thread at Geekstogo, we see these types of issues all the time. You will need to make sure that you follow the protocol exactly as it is listed. There are downloads you'll need to check through for your system, especially "Hijack This!" and "Ewido security scanner" that will look at the issues in your system for registry issues and help suggest repairs (in some cases they will perform these repairs). Even if it appears that you have resolved the issue early on, we have found that some of these registry issues evade detection by appearing to be removed, but reinstall from what appears to be an innocuous registry entry when the system reboots, so it is very important that you follow all the way through on this thread. If you're finally stumped after going through the thread, post an entry to the hijack thread there and one of us will personally review the results of the Hijack This! run and look for the problem (SOMETIMES IT REQUIRES THIS), but please keep in mind that everyone that works on the GeeksToGo pages are volunteers (MUCH LIKE TRT ), and it may take a few days to resolve your problems.
USUALLY just going through the steps outlined in the thread link above will fix your problems, but if not, there are really good folks that CAN help you there, it is a trusted site, unlike some of the "trap" sites set up to sell you security by loading you with a Trojan or virus that only "...their software can detect and fix..."

Both links go to the same page: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index...ST&f=37&t=2852
So, maybe I need to register before viewing the links you posted? Or maybe the first link is for me to register, and then the next link will go elsewhere...
going to register now.
Again, Thanks!

will help you maximize the system once you get the registry fixed.

I did every step on Geekstogo ... nothing found anything bad... but I still had the problems. I posted the log and never got a response, and now I can't find where I posted it at all! ?? I thought I posted it in the right place... and usercp has no option to find your posts...
So... after doing a twin backup of everything... I did a system restore today... and it went just fine! Very easy... and it works fine now with no more errors on bootup etc. The odd thing is, I assumed it would format the entire hard drive, not just the C partition. It left all the data alone on the D partition.
Thanks for all the help... I'll never know what that German stuff was or why my "volume" could not be accessed...
Thanks!
Shirley

I went to look for your post, but did not find it, although I can see where you visited and went through the site. Dunno why it would not have posted your post...
...but glad to see you're up and running!

It posted it... but I can't find it now. I've looked everywhere. Odd thing is, I hit "post message" after reading and doing everything and thought I was posting in the correct forum, but mine was the ONLY post there... very weird. I usually don't "get lost" on a forum.
But... there's a lot of good tips and software links there!
Now, do people like Spysweep better than Spybot S&D or AdawareSE? I was told by the Geek Squad at B. Buy (fwiw) that Spysweep is the best... $29 at Best Buy.

Without looking at your system, I can't be sure.
But it SOUNDS like your hard drives corrupted a bit.
My suggestion...get a new one (for $100, you can get one 10 TIMES the size of your current one).
Install it. Changing the jumper pins to make the new HD the master, and the old HD the slave.
Reinstall windows and everything on your new HD. Then, once you're up and running, copy everything you need from your old one to the new one. WHen that's done...remove the old one.
Just my suggestion

Thanks, but just before all this happened, I got a 200 GB internal and made the slave and a data drive... so now I have the 80GB for OS and partioned automatically by the restore CDs as part data. I think it's 20GB OS and 60 data. They are both 7200 speed, at least I think the initial one is 7200.
It's working fine since last night when I did the restore.... (fingers crossed)
