Poor day for our bird...
Last night, Phoebe, our 8 month old pearl breasted cockatiel, got out. My brother Forrest(11 years old), was playing with her and set her down on the back of a chair for a moment while he fed the outside birds. He left the door open, and she flew out. I got home not long after and we tried to call her down from the poplar tree she was 40feet high in... that didn't work. We got some neighbors over, they brought nets and paint ball guns, we took the paint out and emptied the CO2 until it made a loud racketing sound. The neighbors are really good with birds, they have a number of cockatoos and senegal parrots. We tried to keep her flying by scaring her, trying to get her to come down. We tired her out for two hours as she flew in circles. She kept landing in these dense woods, we tried to keep her flying, but the sun set and we couldn't find her. My brother, Mother and i walked in the woods for hours with flashlights, but we never found her and it got below 10degrees last night...
The worst feeling in the world is when you can't do anything about it, she was alone in the cold last night and I couldn't help her! I didn't get any sleep, i was so upset. In retrospect, we should have clipped her wings more often, my mother was planning on doing it today or tomorrow. I feel awful, even though i don't know of anything else i could have done. Just wanted to get this out, thanks for listening you all.

Big Bummer Austin,,
Don't abandon hope, I've heard of people putting the birds cage out in the yard, where the bird would see it , with the cage door open,,,,
sometimes it works,,,,
I feel for you Bud,

That's sad, Austin. You never know though, we have flocks of escapee parrots up here that are breeding and weathering the winters, so don't give up hope completely yet!

Austin, I'm so terribly sorry!
Cockatiels are the best fliers, even with clipped wings!
Also...they come from a climate where even in the cold...she may have made it through the night. DON'T give up!!
Look at these cockatoos in Ohio; These people used to live in Australia and set their aviary up this way on purpose.
See them in the snow here:

Keep your hopes up, start looking first thing...and I wish you all the best.

Good luck, and keep us updated. I am going to go home tonight, and clip the wings on our Senegal Parot, I know he's due. (He's been flying from his cage to the top of the Christmas Tree, across the room.)

My neighbor accross the street had some Quaker Parrots get out and they hung around for days, and then slowly stopped coming around.
I would go out today and look/listen again. She may return if she hears or sees you.
Good luck.

Thank you everyone! It means a lot to me to hear from you guys. I've gone out and watched in the woods for her a whole lot. I just don't see how it's possible in this cold... But I'm gonna keep hopes up. And yes, we left the cage out in the woods for the last several days. Thanks everyone.

It doesn't seem that significant with 80,000 + dead in the east. But it's still really sad.

I understand that, Austin, but still it's your bird and you cared for her. Years ago my brother in Winchester saw a Maccaw out in the wooded area in his back yard. Somehow the neighborhood got the bird back to the owner.
Don't give up!

We had a baby Military Macaw get out and flew to the top of the oak trees on our farm in PA. I finally went to our electrical co-op and asked them if they would come over with thier cherry picker and get him for us. They laughed at first because they thought it was a joke, then when I explained it in detail they agreed and got the macaw down for us. If you see the bird again, it can't hurt to ask the local utility for help.
