Make sure your air bags are up to snuff... You may also want to get into a habit of taping a pillow to your forehead before going anywhere...

That advice about autocrossing is good. The worst you can do is spin out absolutely ticket free. Round up a Snell approved helmet and contact the SCCA for info for your region.
