Our 14 yr old pomeranian died during surgery
So my baby has passed away She spent the last couple of years with my mom because the kids just terrified her and I was afraid they would hurt her because she only weighed 5 lbs and was tiny. My mom called yesterday to say she wasn't eating and the lump had returned(was told by vet previously it was an ovarian cyst but biopsy said was benign) We put off surgery because of her small size they didn't want to put her under unless it was necessary. After 4 hours they called to tell me it wasnt a cyst this time that her bladder had burst and wasn't repairable and wanted to know if I wanted her put down. At this time I was in shock and agreed for them to put her down. I went to pick her up already distraught and was landed with a bill for $760.00. Later when I was more rational I called them up to find out why it was so high. I new it would be at least $250 for office and anestesia and could go up but that was before knowing there was nothing they could do. Well the other $510 is supposedly for 3 hrs of exploratory surgery and then the euthanasia cost. Now I am just ticked. Why did it take 3 hours for them to find and locate that her bladder had burst! I would have spent what ever it took to save her but they couldn't and now I am out all that money plus I had to bury my baby I have had for almost 15 years! I don't mean to make this seem more about money that really isn't the issue. After 4 hours I was thinking they were calling me to let me know they were done and I could come check on her not that there was nothing they could do. They also couldn't tell me why the surgery took 3 hours just that when they didnt find a cyst they were not sure what was making her sick. To me it seems that a bladder being burst would be fairly obvious! Well I am looking into finding another vet for my sheltie because I could never take her in there for fear of another call like the one I got today.

So sorry to hear that.
I agree with you.. you would think there should of been urine present inside not? that should of been the first clue.. also you would believe there should of been bleeding from a bladder bursting.

I am so very sorry to hear about that. I have no idea why things happened the way they did. I would ask your veterinarian (when you can) to explain it to you. I find that charging a client a lot of money after something like that happens one of the hardest things to do. Plus I am super compassionate and would probably just charge for materials used and not surgery time. But to each their own. Times are extremely difficult right now and some people have no choice to charge. I'm sure the vet feels terrible. Trust me on that.

Jena I am sorry for your loss, we had to put our 14-year-old dog to sleep last year and it was a very tough thing to do. That would upset me too that they will not give you a answer as to why the surgery took so long and it cost that much.

Jenna I am so very sorry. My cat is 15 years old and my life. I don't have much family left and the only company I have at the moment is my cat.
Why does this always happen around the holidays?

Thanks guys. I knew her time would come soon just wasn't expecting it to be this soon. It is just so confusing because she was still her happy self just not eating and she was taking in fluid but not eating solids. She also peed before going to the vet and there wasn't any blood. I guess that's why this is all so confusing and hard to accept.

I am so sorry for your loss. Evertime one of mine goes it just kills me.
Butonly once did I have a vet charge me that much when the animal couldn't be saved.
Maybe you could ask around and get recommendations for another vet?
Again I am so sorry for your loss.

Jena, I am truly sorry about the loss of your lttle Pom. It is so hard to lose one of our precious little pets, especially under those circumstances. Dogs just don't live as long as we do, even with good health, but the joy they bring while with us can't be measured in years. I'm sure yours left a lot of love for you.
