OK This CANT BE SMART

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070828/D8RA21B01.html

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

"This has been a great end to a great summer," Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc' (AAPL)s popular product from AT&T's network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone's June 29 launch.

Hotz made the deal with Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.

"We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery," Daidone said in a statement.

Isn't that illegal, at the very least I would think that Apple is going to be really PO'd, hope his new employer has good cyber lawyers

He demonstrated his little trick on CNBC last week, so I'm sure CNBC's lawyers made sure everything was ok.

Apparently, CNBC contacted both Apple and AT&T and reps from both companies had no comment.

in the end i think it is funny. Apple was exclusive for so many years with their computers and it almost killed them... now they are pulling the same crap again. I wish they would just fade away... then again, that is just my opinion.

On the one hand i can understand people frustration with propriatory hardware or technology, but when you take a companies product and modify it to use it for other than the intended use, that seems dishonest to me. Especially when he trade the hacked phone for an expensive car and more phones. The company that wound up with it says its not planning to market(profit) from it, BS why would they put out that kind of money for a curio?

Why wouldn't Apple want the IPhone compatiable with other networks???? ATT probally has the least subscribers compared to sprint and verizon. If Apple truely wanted this phone to be ONLY compatiable with ATT they would have engineered it so. Look at the RAZR phone wasn't it only avaliable from sprint for the first 6 months to a year?

It isn't like he hacked the phone for free use with other networks. you still have to pay for service but now there are option other than ATT

I had unlocked my nokia phone back about three years ago. i had t-moblie and i liked the idea that my phone "could" be used with any phone comp. that uses the sim card. Course i never used anything but t-Moblie but i liked the idea.

i will be interesting to see where this goes. of course the iphone isn't worth having.. the battery has to be replaced at the factory. something they didn't admit to until after the phone was out for awhile.

I actually been following his website where he did that hacks. Talk about craziness!!! Open case get a switch so you can solder a wire to the chip then to the switch then to a battery. So when you flip the switch it will make the chip think it has no memory craziness!! If i paid 600 for that phone trust me i would not be soldering wires to its board

i only have 1 reason to keep one and thats so the wife can call me if i'm out.. well.. if i am out alone then i really don't want anyone calling me. lol.. my time..

i can't even stand them around me. seems like everyone has them and are always on them when they are walking, standing, driving.. drives me nuts .. how can anyone have that much to talk about??

oh and heaven forbid i leave the kids with some one while i take the wife to dinner and a movie. won't be gone 10 minutes before the "are you on the way home yet" starts..

needless to say.. i won't get another.
