Ok How is this happening

I run XP and have a firewall up how in the heck does this junk software crap get auto installed on my puter? I have spent the last 2 nights removing software that I have never heard of.
What can I do to prevent it

Spyware, adware, etc., Jeff?
Firewall mostly prevents intrusion from without.
If you loaded the script yourself via the browser, you're toast:

You voluntarily visit a website, and the page script YOU loaded does the rest, downloading the installer and running it in the background. Some websites ask you if you REALLY want the stuff installed, but most really don't. What I really hate are trojans that mess with the 'puter all the way down to the registry so your browser always points to x website every startup.

Lots of reference material on line by line removal, or free blockers on the web if you look around.

I had a mess shortly after I went from Earthlink to Cable. The direct open connection allowed so much garbage in (I was ignorant of the need for firewalls and other security programs)

Eventually, it got so bad I had to reinstall Windows; what a pain!

I now run Sygate Personal Firewall; PopUp Stopper; SpyBot Search & Destroy; Clean Sweep; Norton AV; yet some junk still manages to get through! I'm not a tecchie so it's a constant battle.

It's a shame that Windows is so vulnerable to these hacker-terrorists. Makes me want to buy a Mac!

Hope you get yours straightened out.

Dick

For spyware and adware issues download AdAware. Its a FREE program that diagnoses your system and allows you to delete that crap as well as offending cookies!
