Nice areas to move to
Just finished my year here in tiny towns unwinding and I am ready to relocate. This unfortunately involves work, but gotta put food on the table.
I am single with a pretty strong engineering/ops/purchasing resume and no ties to anything so the whole banana is quality of life.
Any places that should be on the short list for nice folks, low crime, good nightlife and a reasonable amount of small hi-tech companies?
I am looking for a city of maybe 100,000 to 250,000 with a really big city within three hours and employers of 25 to 300 people.

That almost sounded like here except, a reasonable amount of small hi tech companies and employers of 25 - 300 people.Nothing that small here!Besides you would like the pay but hate to see most go to living here!If you retire her then you can move to any state comfortably.

There is no rush. I earn a decent living by local standards but miss culture badly.
My goal here is to nail down some places to begin a job search and relocation.

That would describe most of the cities of that size in East Tennessee or North Carolina. While 'low crime' doesn't mean 'no crime', this area is far better than many other places in the country. Can't tell you much about the night life scene but it does get dark every evening. Carolina has beaches, too.

Portland area all the way... between intel and some of the other major tech firms you also get a ton of small companies too. Weather is nice all year round with snow maybe 1 out of 6 years during the winter and generally moderate temps year round. plus the beach is 1hr to the west and the mountains are 1hr to the east. good art culture. pick one of the burbs like Beaverton or tigard and the crime rate is pretty low too.

We've been looking at N.C. Area's pretty booming there, and from what i hear, companies are paying rates comparable to San Diego, Vegas, DC, etc...but housing is incredibly cheap there.

I would say the north suburbs on Chicago. Lots of manufacturing work up there, even some of the big companies like Motorola. Property taxes are kind of high, buy hey.

Living in the Upstate portion of South Carolina, I'd agree with Cath that there's probably plenty of opportunities in this area and it's growing quickly. You'd be an hour or two away from Atlanta or Charlotte, depending on exactly where you lived. Other than that, I'd suggest living in the outskirts of Charlotte or Atlanta (sounds repetitive). Mild weather here in the south (except for summer) and pretty good quality of living and low cost of living too.

I would say the cost of living is still rather inexpensive here in Atlanta compared to other areas of the country. Housing in parts of Atlanta have really shot up in price the last couple of years. Getting around Atlanta has really become a PITA. Let's see I live in NE Atlanta, I have 4 Super Walmarts, 4 Home Depots, 3 major malls all within a 10-15 minute drive of my house. I use to work 17 miles away and it would take me anywhere for 30 minutes to an hour and half to get there. There are times when I can be in SC or NC quicker than I can get to the Atlanta airport. If you like sprawl and suburbia then Atlanta is the place to be. If it snows an 1" look out, bread and milk are gone off the shelves and schools are closed.
But property taxes on my 2700 sq ft house runs $2K a yr. Not bad. The same size house new is going for $260+.
I think that several areas in SC and NC are becoming expensive as well. Partly due to the influx of northerns coming down this way. Hey I did not use the word Yankee. Part of it is due to retires moving down this way or "halfback" which is a yankee that moved to Florida did not like it and moved half way back ending up in the mountains of TN, GA, NC and SC.
Manufacturing remains very strong in the SE even with the loss of textiles, furniture and tobacco. Automotive has picked up some of that loss. Ford and GM are shutting down plants here in Atlanta. And a lot of service industries and HQ headed to the Atlanta area. The Research Triangle in NC has a lot to high technical jobs. Several counties down here are trying to emulate that.
