New to Saltwater, but no new tank!
First off, Hey everyone!
I've been in the fishkeeping hobby for almost 2 years now, with 3 successful freshwater planted tanks. I know that it is very good to start a tank with great knowledge of exactly what you're going to do. After watching my brother and my grandma starting up saltwater nano tanks with success, I'm getting drawn in everyday. Fortunately I want to learn I do not have a cent of money but have an empty brain ready to have info on the salty side of fish poured in. I am really going to try to lay back on my freshwater tanks and try not to buy anything but food(3 bucks maybe every 10 months?) I have a 10g, 5g, and 1g all planted. My plan is to save as much money as I can in the course of 1, maybe even 2 years to start up a saltwater tank. Getting paid my 2 week allowance of my age(14), It will take a while. If I really do save my money and try to buy almost nothing, I will probably have hundreds of dollars, but the most important thing is that I learn as much as I can about saltwater before I actually convert my 10g to saltwater. It is my main tank but I would really like to go saltwater.
Well, sorry for the long long story but I'm ready to learn and I'm hoping I can absorb great info on this site from many experienced members.
Thanks,
Smalltank

Great attitude SmallTank! By the time you have the money you will buy quality equiptment and not have to re-buy everything Like you said, in this hobby Knoladge is everything.
I do have a couple of tips,.. often times people getting out of the hobby sell good equiptment for 50% of retail,.. it's a good way to pick up quality stuff at a much discounted price.
Look for a cub in your area,.. It's good to get to know people in the hobby, plus you can buy frags (small cuttings of coral) for much less than pet store prices and watch them grow!
I am into planted tanks as well,.. actually the link in my sig is a build thread on my 25G planted,.. plus there are pics in there of the 180G planted tank I just tore down to setup reef.
This is a great place to learn! Your approching this hobby the right way

Yes, my LFS, a pretty good one that has SW and FW has a used section area. They have a bunch of barely used equipment and thats where I am pretty sure I would get my light. My brother got his 8g glass tank that came with a good quality light for $40.
Thanks for the welcome and tips. Looking forward to asking more questions on here

RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH before spending any $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
SW is not cheap but you can set up a functioning tank reasonable, esp a nano, but the key is wise buys and getting it right the first time
Welcome to TRT, enjoy the ride

Welcome to the TRT.
Age 14 years really???
I'm 24 not much more than you. I started my 20 gal long nano reef back in march and having a little problems only because i took it down to drill the tank but thats my fault. Had the tank running before i found this site.
These guys here will not stear you wrong. They have helped me more than they know. I have three tanks. A 120 gal that is cracked and hopeing to turn into a sump for "future" 220 gal. A 55 FW for wifes Oscars. And my 20 gal SW nano Reef.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask them. Almost everyone has something good to add to the info.

Hey there! Welcome to TRT! You are starting out with an exceptional attitude and plan. Look around and find the kind of tank that appeals to you most then find out what type of coral it has and the demands of that type of coral. If you stay with your plan you are bound to succeed!

The General forum has a lot of people in there that will help also. Hence "General Reef discussion"
That way more people will see your threads. Of course when you get down to the nitty gritty about specific questions then special forums are set up though.

Yes, I'm only 14
Don't worry, I don't plan on spending money for a long time! All I want to spend is the time learning about nano reefs and saltwater. Thanks for all of the welcomes and info.

Yup, save up your money and do lots of reseach! The are alot of different options on tank set ups, equipment, and live stock options.
Ditto what doug said, ask questions before you go and buy anything, theres alot of crap out there!
If you have any questions feel free to ask me or anybody else here.
