Name this tree (in Santa Cruz)
My brother and sister-in-law were in Santa Cruz a few months ago. I know it's a small photo, but can you all help to ID it?
Nancy's description " So we are walking down the sidewalk in Santa Cruz and come upon this big MESS of red/orange stuff on the ground and I couldn't figure out what it was. Then (DUH) we looked up to see this!!! So what is it??? "

Sorry, couldn't resist...my girls have done the what should we name this stuffed animal, dog, cat, fish, snail, crab, etc., etc. for so many years that any time I hear "name this ...." I automatically reply "Fred".
Seriously, I looked at some references I have did not find a tree that matched your picture. Maybe a bump will find someone in Cali that knows what it is.

It may be a sweetgum, many municipalities in central California use them for street trees. There really is no way to tell is such a small picture with no leak, seed, or bark to identify, but the Sweetgum is heavily used in that area and will provide the coloration shown in the photo.
....
Is the color from flowers or leaves?

But I think you are on the right track.
Cath I think it is a Corymbia ficifolia or Red Flowering Gum (previously known as Eucalyptus ficifolia)
here is a pic tell me what you think
I found info here(it is tree#11(looking at your pic and this pic I am almost posative it is a pic of the same tree))

Sorry, I didn't get the name thing, But since Billy The Mountain is one of my favorite Zappa songs
"Billy the mountain
Billy the mountain
A regular picturesque
Postcardy mountain
Residing between lovely
Rosamond and gorman
With his stunning wife ethel
A tree, a tree.
Billy was a mountain
Ethel was a tree growing off of his shoulder"
I guess I will go with Ethel
