my new hobby
well, i was listening to some great jams on the radio while driving back from the lfs, and the lms (local music store) on the way home was advertising a end of the year clearance sale. soo i decided to look around to see what they had on sale. this was marked 45% off, and i had some visa gift cards that needed to spent.... so bought this ibanez sc420 with a small crate amplifier, and basic guitar learning book after a day of plucking and strumming, my fingertips are very sore! but its fun, and i like it alot! the sticker price was a jawdropper, but with it being discounted, and the giftcards in hand, it turned out to be very affordable! so practice make perfect, and i plan on practicing about an hour or so a day on my own for awhile before taking lessons. any guitar player here on the forum, would like some tips on how to make my fingertips stop hurting

My son started taking lessons in the fall. We got him a Washburn and an amp for Christmas. I'm really surprised at how fast he's picking it up.

you fingers will hurt, and for a while, DO NOT pick and pull at the callouses, they will have to form again, and it will make it take forever, plan to be sore for 2-3 weeks, also fret right up against the frets, it decreases the amount of pressure needed to make the note, and keep your hand relaxed, avoid the death grip, it is not necessary, start learning scales immediatly, youwill prolly want to spend all of your time making cords but try spending equal time on chords, scales, right hand technique etc... there is no substitute for a good teacher, bad habits are harder to break after youve been doing them a long time done bun cant be undone !!

alw, 2-3 weeks of pain.... yeowch! those thin strings are like razors!
i've got a poster that has like 50+ cords, but nothing that shows individual notes on the frets. i also picked up an electronic string tuner, and one of those grip masters to help build up my finger strength.
rick, i hope i can learn to pick it up just as quick!
buddha, how long did it take you to master the art of switching to new cords?
thanks for the info!

Well I took lessons first when I was about 15 years old. I think at about the 2 year marker I was starting to sound really good. Now that it's 10 years later I think I can play just about anything put in front of me.
