More computer problems

Boy I tell ya, this must be the time of year for computer problems. I just got my computer out of the shop, the power supply went bad, one hard drive went bad, one stick of ram went bad, and my proscessor went bad, all at the same time.

I plugged my laptop into a new surge protector and blew the mother board, how is that for luck? New Gateway 4200 was the solution

Pretty common, sounds like a cheap power supply, when they go they usually take a few parts with them when they short. I just had one go yesterday.

I can't remember the brand of the power supply but it was a good 430 watt unit, but in all honesty it was five years old as were the ram chip and the processor. The one thing that bugs me is that the hard drive that went bad was only a year old and the one that's still good is four years old.

Well almost all HDD have a 3 year warranty, get on there site and check the serial, odds are you send it in and they will send you a new one.

I was a tech manager at a very large store for a long time, specially if its maxtor or WD, they both have great service, just maxtor sucks.

It's a WD but the guy at the computer shop said that if you buy them at circuit city they only carry a years warranty and that just happens to be where I bought it. I just went out and bought a 160 gig drive, I'd been wanting more storage space anyway.

Yep, just checked the manufacturers web site and it's just a little older than I thought, says that it's out of warranty since april.

Might be time to go to the out of box and scratched and dented section of your nearest superstore and get a new computer and cut your losses. These things are pretty much disposables nowadays.

I only use Maxtors on my computers. My 6-7 year old desktop has a 40 gig maxtor that still is running strong. The motherboard just started going bad so i had to replace some things so i just got a new Gateway laptop.

I've only ever used Western Digital so I can't say whether Maxtors are any good or not, but I will say that I've been very impressed with the WD's. I've had about six of them through a couple of different computers and only one has gone bad, I'd say that's a pretty good record of quality.
