 Define "in line"? Like external out of the sump, inline with the drainline to sump or sort of a HOB tank only?

Are your parameters pretty much zero across the board with maybe the exception of some slightly elevated no3?

yes
I don't think I ever had an ammonia spike according to my ammonia indicator and the LFS said levels were good

Waterchange it is  I have not had a true cycle myself since I set up my first 55, since I've always used the same cured rock with macro. I always have a tad elevation in no3 and then zeros.
