Meet Pepe!

They're here!!!

Today I received 2 blue crown conures!! They are just gorgeous and they love me

This is Pepe. She met me first last week and decided I'd do Woodstock is her buddy but he's still a bit camera shy. Of course my camera batteries died, so once they are charged up again, perhaps he'll mug a bit.

They love their new digs and have been playing in their new cage, and all over me, for most of the day. Not sure who will be more tired, them or me

I think I'm going to like my new feathered fishes!

I like the way she is peeping over your shoulder, Jenn!

Since you spend most of your waking hours at the shop, I guess it makes sense to have your new friends there with you.

Yeah no kidding. It wasn't an easy decision - ask ShirleyM I have picked her brain clean There were concerns about teasing etc., but my shop is small, quiet (well not quiet anymore! SQUAWK!) and I know my customers. No issues with unattended kids etc., because we feed them to the triggers

Their first day has been great. Steady customer day, everybody chatted to them, we got a few "Hellos" and some whistles and some clicking sounds. They are quite content sitting on my shoulders either individually or together.

I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship... good thing, they are expected to live another 30-35 years

Awww...that's a great portrait of you and Pepe, Jenn. I can see her personality right there in the picture. Bird personalities can be a great source of fun.

There is a pair of parrotlets at my local pet store (lps?) that have won my heart. But I have no room for more pets!

Deborah

PS Are you going to start carrying bird supplies in your fish store :-)?

Deborah, no I don't plan to carry supplies... just glad that I can get my own stuff wholesale

First pair... OY VEY! I'm just lucky that Scott agreed to this pair. They like him too - and he's not a bird lover but they are schmoozing him over ... it's too funny.

We had a busy day... I am sure they are snug in their cage, we "close" at 6 but we still had customers in the store at 8 tonight... I covered the cage before we left and said good night. I'll be back bright and squirrely in the morning.

They really are so friendly and charming - I'm really glad to have them!

that is SO true, its really hard to not eep falling in love with them, once you get to know one you are able to quickly recognise personality in all the others you see, and then you get attached.

the only reason i only have the birds i have (1 conure, 2 tiels and 4 canaries) is because i let my hubby put his foot down on more birds.

i used to have a couple cages full of finches, but they drove hubby nuts with i thought was their delightful, incessant peeping. but i made a deal with him to not whine about the ones i kept and i'd sell the finches. But i still miss them very much. they are the only pets i have ever relinquished.

Birds are wonderful, as pretty as beautiful saltwater fish, but even more personable.

Yeah the shirts I wore yesterday and Saturday, came home two-toned

I did mean to bring some spares...

I wear a towel on my shoulder much of the time to wipe hands, but they don't like sitting on that (of course )

Jenn, Did you know you can potty train most parrots?

Keep a small wastebasket nearby, hold the bird over the basket, say the words you want him to associate with "going potty", and wait a minute. The first time you coordinate this with him needing to go, praise him and use the potty words again (Good Pepe! Go Potty!) Once they get the understanding, you will have very few accidents. You must anticipate their needs...they aren't going to tell you. However, most parrots would much rather go somewhere besides on their person. Watch for signs...like he backs up first before going, etc.

During our 17-hr drive to Florida, their waste basket was in sight in the van...I think we had maybe two accidents.

You know the first day I met Pepe she didn't "go" on me... she did go on Scott - twice

I understand that their physiology means that they can't hold it for long... no bladder.. and when I place them back in the cage they go almost immediately.

I have probably just kept them out too long or didn't give them a chance to not go on me ... or when I put them down on a play area they went. I'll "listen" to their body language a bit more carefully. Sorry - new mom - I'm just over-enthusiastic

I have a feeling that potty matters were managed with their former keepers, so I don't want to 'undo' that I'll work on that today

Sounds good! As for not being able to hold it...

Ours sleep all night without going, then the big one comes first thing in the morning. A canary will sit on her nest for many hours in a row...when she finally gets off to use the bathroom, it's pretty amazing...(the male feeds her while she's on the nest)

Also, when Shelby is wearing her flightsuit (which has a built-in diaper), she goes 0-3 times during 4 hours...but she'd go much more often without the suit. (She wears the flightsuit when she's out visiting lots of people)

Well from keeping birds long ago, I read they have not much storage capacity because it would weigh them down... although I guess they can choose their location They can certainly "feel it coming"

Already when the phone rings, they ring with it They stop a ring or two after I pick up!

They are a bit reluctant to come out of the cage... a bit nippy (nervous?) but once they are out, they are real schmoozers.

I figure they are still settling in... but so far I'm loving them.

I have an unlimited supply of paper for the catch tray on the cage - my wholesale orders come packed with blank newsprint... so I've got lots of changes ready and the cage I got is very "user friendly"... takes 30 seconds to change the tray, and probably take me 5 minutes to scrub the grid.

Toys...need more toys... my friend in the biz said she'd hook me up
