Lost Squadron
Did anyone see the show on the History Channel last night about The Lost Squadron? I had been following the story for the last several years because of it's local connection. I can't imagine someone being so obsessed with a project but I'm happy to see it come to completion. The aircraft is based in KY so if you're in the area it would certainly be worth visiting the museum.

I thought that was a very interesting show. I also love the history channel and love P38's. One does have to wonder why spend so much money on a plane like that but yet if I won a lottery I would maybe try to do the same thing.

Yes Doug, they were covered by 250 feet of glacier . There were 6 P 38's and a few B17's that crashed in 1942, I believe.
There are still 5 more P 38's under there is you can scrape up 10-20 million to get it out and restore it.

I seem to remember a fatal atempt to restore and fly an abandoned P-38 out of Greenland. One of the restorers died of exhaustion/exposure, and the plane caught fire while attempting takeoff.
I also remember receiving a Cristmas gift of a Revell plastic model kit of a Lightning (Pacific Theater), with glue, decals and all...
Ahhh, the misspent days of my youth

I hope to see the show on The History Channel again. The story is also told in a book but I'm not much for reading when I can watch it on the tube.
Originally they thought the airplanes would still be on top of the ice. Plans were to fill them up with fuel and fly them out. Rumor was that the planes had been seen as recently as the 60's.
I'm curious as to what the final price tag was. Either I missed it on the show or they didn't say.

I need to confirm but I believe the one that has flown here belongs to someone from Erickson Sky Crane, ( the big heavy lift helos) and one may be cannibalized for parts, tho the functional one is going to display some where. I got a brief glimpse of it up for a shrt test hop, but man, the sound of those twin 12s and the sight of it in the air
