keeping cats cool in the heat >^..^<

ok so get this, it's upper 90's here, and i'm on the third floor in an apartment. to make matter worse, my landlord has our HEAT ON UGH!!!!!!!!!! the big jerk. (and he says "yer heat's not on", but hmm, why is all this hot air coming from the radiators and it's like 9million degrees coolor in the hallways & outside than in our apartment?? think i should call the police?)

anyhoo, my cats are feeling the brunt of this, and have been actually panting, which when a cat pants, it is a VERY bad sign.

i called around the vets & some pet stores to find out some tips on keeping cats cool in the summer & i know there are a few other cat people around here, so i'd like to share:

if a cat is panting, it means they are seriously dehydrated. sometimes it doesn't matter how much water you put down, if they get to this point, they may become too tired to walk over to their dish. it's ok to fill extra dishes & put them all over the place, and even bring a bowl of water over to where they are lying down & have them take a sip if they seem like they aren't visiting the water dish on their own.

scoop up a little bit of water and rub it in the backs of their heads and ears. make sure the water isn't *too* cold, or it could cause shock. they will hate it when you do this, and may get mad at you, but it is better for them to be cool & mad, than hot & sick.

the best tip: get a large towel & run it under the tap in cool water (again, not *too* cold) wring out the towel until it's just damp & then scoop up the cat & wrap them in the towel for a few minutes. they'll struggle, they'll growl, they may even try to nip you, but it will bring their body temp down. if the cat is struggling too much to be held, place the towel over them on the floor and hold them down with the towel over them (but not over their head)

i asked if it would be advisable to just dunk 'em in a tub of water, and they said you *can* do that but the towel trick will work better and they won't get *quite* as wet....which will make them a little less mad at you

if anyone else has some good tips on keeping kitties cool in massive heat waves, please share!! my kitties are my babies, and it is h-o-t up here in this apartment!! (efffing landlord GGRRRRRRRRR and i'm holding his rent hostage too, the poopie head)

Poor cats...and poor people in the building, going through that heat!

I'm not sure what type of radiators you have, is there no handle to turn them off in your apartment? If there's not a handle, there may be a valve you can close with a screw driver or a barrel key. Take a look and see. Do you have exposed pipes? There can also be a valve on the pipes, like a ball valve, but it will be a square or rectangular bolt. Turn it perpendicular to the pipe, just like a ball valve, and that should shut the hot water coming down through those pipes Be gentle with those flow valves if you find one, don't wrench on it, the last thing you want is for it to break and start spraying hot water all over!

Stay cool!

Ive seen people shave cats in the summer. All the shaved cats I have seen seem embarresed that they look like space aliens though. Keeps them cool even if they do look foolish.

Id complain even further. Force to show him what your house feels like. Other than that I'm not sure what else you could do. Maybe the thermostat is busted up. In that case he NEEDS to fix it. (I would love to say HAS, but thats all per the rental agreement I suppose)

We only get into the 80s here but our cats always manage to find a nice cool spot in the bedroom. I suppose you could always try a Reef Tank trick and freeze some pop bottles and stick them under a blanket or around their favorite lounging area. Our Male likes the Fan, while the female just tolerates it wherever she is.

We also leave the water running in the faucet or bathtub sometimes, which allows them to play in it, wet themselves down and drink some very freshly cool water.

Keep those kitties cool!!

PS: Do you have pictures of your Kittens? We are expecting our first litter of Pixie Bobs from our female, Mischief; in the end of july beginning of August. Id love to share some back and forth when they are born!

BTW Since your a huge Cat person! If your interested you can learn more about the breed here! www.pixiebobs.com

Losta pictures for viewing enjoyment. Just gotta put a plug in, because I love these cats. We have only had ours for over a year now, but they are such unique cats I cant stop talking about them to people!

hey there balakoth...

well my landlord was here today, he swears the heat isn't on, it's the hot water pipes...funny though, it comes out of the radiator...

i only have one kitten right now. i also have her parents here for the summer while my friend is on her vacation (the kitten was payment for taking care of her couple) oh and i also have our black cat, delia, who is in this pic with me (my avatar)

i am planning on breeding phoenix when she becomes of age, i think she'll make wonderful little siamese babies...

but until then, i can't trade many pix
(also 'cos my digital camera is in the pawn shop :P )

but i'd LOVE to see some of yours when the big day comes!!!

My advice is to offer them ice cubes to lick, or, place in the water bowl. A couple of mine love to 'play' in the water and bat at the floating cubes. Also, you could mix a chicken bullion cube into 1 cup of water and freeze in an ice cube tray, then offer the cubes as popsicles to them. Ice cream is always popular with my horde, although lactose intolerant cats will not thank you for this treat. I don't recommend shaving or soaking-it's too drastic and stressful. Soaking the fur will actually cause the cat to feel hotter after the initial cool off because the wet fur will hold in the body heat until the fur dries out. Dampening the outer fur would work best to cool them down as it will allow better evaporation. Just use a damp rag and wipe their faces and down their backs and sides. A fan will help with evaporation. HTH
