If you live in a house I would recommend a generator. I passed on a great deal on one at Costco last year. $385 for a 6000 watt. I'm still kicking myself for not getting one. It was summer time though and was low on the priority list at the time.

Hey there,
We were nailed by a major ice storm in January, and lost power for over 5 days (along with the rest of KC...) We watched most of KC go very cold and very dark - other than the odd blue glow and buzzing noise from the transformers blowing across the city, of course. Here are my thoughts on keeping your tank alive:
Know your neighbors - one of ours is a contractor who had a *spare* generator, and singlehandedly saved our tank the first night. You never know who will be the right person to know.
Buy a generator. If you own your own home, it's an insurance for your tank. Don't wait until disaster strikes - we waited 5 hours for a generator that we weren't sure would even arrive. (Thank goodness it did!) We paid $400 for a 5000W (remanufactured Coleman) but it ran just fine, and was a great deal - especially considering how hot a commodity it was at the time.
Battery powered air bubblers. Good for short outages, moves, and emergency backup.
Another though it to make sure that there aren't limbs above your power lines, if possible. One limb barely missed our electrical line, but ripped out the cable line. The poor folks who had electrical lines ripped from their homes waited up to 14 days before getting power back.
Just my 2c, but something to consider.

if i had a house, i would go the generator route fer sure. but i live in a tiki hut. so, i was looking for a good size ups just to run the main pump. maintianing lights isn't important as preventing overflow is.
thanks anyhow...

Not sure on the sizes fof battery back up UPS like used on puters but I would think one in the $200 range will keep a few powerheads going for about 24 hrs. Heat loss shouldnt be a problem this time of year
