Internet service opinions: AT&T DSL vs Comcast Cable
QUESTION: I've been under the impression Cable Hi-speed Internet is always faster than DSL... True? or not?
My current service with Comcast Cable is 10Mbps upload and 2 Mbps download.
Thanks,
Shirley

I just went through all this and switched our DSL to Cable. We live too far from a DSL station evidently and were only getting 0.7 Mbps although we were promised 3. I switched to Comcast and we are getting 8Mbps.
DSL is now promising 20, but only in some new housing tracts that have the infrastructure to support it. You can call up your DSL provider and they will run a test on your phone lines and tell you what they can do.

Thanks, Perry - seems they charge a lot more for the "faster" speeds that Comcast delivers with their basic pkg.
The main reason I was looking into this is b/c we now have two HDTV's, and comcast charges $16/mo for DVR, then $7 for the receiver for the 2nd TV. AT&T U-verse comes with DVR which can then play the recorded shows on any TV, whereas Comcast cannot. I don't want to sacrifice Internet speed just for DVR, though.

We actually pay a little more and have Dish Network, Comcast Hi Speed and an AT&T landline. Each service was what we wanted and we don't live where it can all be bundled. The bundle things go state by state with all of these laws.

Thanks - I'd prefer to keep it all bundled.

I used to have comcast bundled but it got so expensive with all the add-ons it was crazy...all I really wanted was a good selection of HD channels, so I went with comcast for internet and Dish for TV...only saved a few $$$ by spliting it up, but I get better HD programing with Dish without having to pay for a BUNCH of channels I'll never watch...as for speed it depends on how many people in your neighborhood are using the same bandwidth but I've not seen any DSL setups that come close to cable for speed.

Thanks - that's what I've been reading and hearing as I researched this earlier today... I'd save about $5 if I used Direct-TV for TV and Comcast for everything else. Guess I'll keep comcast and add a receiver to the new set.

Ha! Well... so far, it seems best $-wise to stick with what we've got - comcast cable.

I am still waiting on a better option than Satellite, on a limited income the buy in is horrendous, and I have never heard anyone rave about the service

Yeah, for the bux, especially $$$ Vs. speed, it is definitely a looser.
I would faint if I had 8 MbPS, I can get 1 on good days, but it is the same both ways.

Probably your best plan, Shirley. I've got Comcast cable 'net (10 mbps) and tv. Splitting services between two companies always seems more hassle and expensive than combining them.
