I'm looking for a new.... Dog
When I moved back to NY I had to give away my german shepherd
because we were moving into an apartment and they would not allow
her anywhere.
I gave here away to a lady I had worked with who had
a german shepherd so she knew how to handle them.
(They can be demanding)
So now that I bought a house I'd like to have a dog again.
I don't want to be short sighted and only focus on german shepherds.
So I am looking for suggestions on other breeds,
actually for first hand experiance as to the breed.
Thank you!

What are you looking for in a dog? That is the important part. I've raised rotties, shepherds, mals and dutchies for work... But I like aussies for family life...

I love my aussie shepard, but it is not a breed I would advise everyone to get by any stretch of the imagination. He is VERY territorial to anyone but me and mine. If he does not recognize someone as a member of the family nobody steps foot on the property. There are 2 disctinct lines of aussies, ASCA and AKC. AKCs are bred to be friendlier whereas ASCA are still bred to be working ranch dogs and are brd to be skittish and slow to warm to strangers (a desirable trait in ranching) If I were to reccomend one I would say most folks do better with and AKC. Mine is actually mixed, the mother AKC, the father ASCA. Either way they are a fairly high attention, high exercise needing breed. Border collies are very similar but overall more attentive. Really any breed of herding dog is going to be pretty smart. IMO terriers and spaniels are the poorer temperment, but I have not known many that were worked with. I have a friend who has a german shepard that he thinks is spastic, but he only lets the poor thing out of his crate a couple hours a day

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Did someone say herding dog?
Without a doubt the smartest dogs you will find are the working class like herders. I bred Shetland Sheep dogs. Most intelligence rankings have them around #6, but obviously I don't agree. I think they run neck and neck with Border Collies, that are always ranked #1. Border Collies are just more athletic, so they score higher in obedience and agility trials.
Here's Linden Like the Wind. AKA "Wendy"

And her man, Shimmering Sands. AKA "Sand Man"

Have you looked into a rescue society or a shelter? These dogs are often the best family dogs over any particular breed... That is how I wound up with a boxer/ridgeback and a pit/lab...Ok the pit/lab was in a box in front of the grocery store, but he was still "saved" I guess... both are great family dogs... My aussie is as well, but then again he was 5 c notes and the other two were the cost of shots and removal of reproductive organs...

I've Had German Shepherds,Irish Setters Rotties(many) and mutts. And by far I like the Rottweilers By far!Loyal, great with people(specially with kids!) and security(barks if a leave goes the wrong way!Of course with most breeds tho,if you want a pure breed, get it from a good breeder to have not only a healthy dog but they can pic out the right personality out of the litter that would fit your needs.Go luck picking a good dog.
