Getting rid of squirrels

I have a rental house that is being occupied by some unwanted guests. They have chewed a hole in the siding and are living in the walls and attic of the house. These things can do an unbelieveable amount of damage in just a short period of time. I'm taking my Hav-A-Hart trap over today but it only catches them one at a time and I need to get rid of them quicker. Does anyone know if rat poison will work on squirrels? It's a fenced back yard and my tenant doesn't have any children or pets so I was thinking about putting out several packets of it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

the problem with poison is that, if your luck is like mine, they will die in the attic and then you'll have a fly problem. Have you looked at the ultrasonic pest stuff? or maybe try the local ag extention office for ideals.

Yup Rick,,,poison has that problem with leftover bods, in hidden places , reminding you that they are still hidden in the house,,,,
You need to close off wherever they are gettin in at, trim back branches or other means they are using to get in at,,they are pretty resourcful, they'll use a pipe at your elect meter box or any way to get up to the roof, and trap away,,,,then give them a ride far away from the house. I'll ask around to see if i can pass along any info on more help,,,

I've seen one climb up the side of our brick home to get on the roof. Our neighbor has had them and just recently I was told to put moth balls in the attic. Apparently they hate the smell and will leave. The house will smell like moth balls for a few days and once they're out close up the hole. Don't know from experience but this person insisted it worked. Let me know if you try it.

Good luck,

Pam

Best bet is to trap them. I used a bb gun once and it died in the ceiling. Had to tear apart half the ceiling to find the stinking body in the middle of a hot summer. Never do that again!

Rick, show that yeller pup of yours a pic of a squirrel,,and tell him he gets a biscuit for every one he "removes". Being a Golden, He'll probably sublet out the job to a terrier down the street, for 1/2 a biscuit,,,
good luck!

Those are some great suggestions. I never thought about moth balls. I'll give that a try. I'll hold off on the rat poison. This is a good tenant and I would hate to lose her over a dead animal smell.

Jeff, Casey (the dog not the mod) is 0-fer in the squirrel catching dept. Although he never gets tired of chasing them.

That's a crappy problem to have because they seem to always have more extended family that move in to their old digs when they leave

I tried moth balls in my shed back home - the mice didn't seem to mind the smell I did.. I hate the smell of moth balls - I must have been a moth in another life My mother used rat poison for squirrels in the eves and that worked but the dead animal stench was awful. We also had flying squirrels - one gnawed through into the house one night and "flew" right onto my sister's chest as she slept We had to call an exterminator in the night, he came out, cornered the little booger in the closet - did a "squirrel in the headlights" with his flashlight and while it was dazzled, he picked it up, put it in a cage and took it away.

My mom had best success with a live trap on the roof of the house and took them away for a ride in the country, one at a time.

Squirrels are just rats with good PR.
