Gas prices
Ok ya'll it's getting to the point of downright GOUGING now. I can't speak for everywhere but here in the Carolinas we are seeing prices jump .30- .60 a day. It's expected to be over 4.00 per gallon by labor day. How are people supposed to live like this.
Is it this bad everywhere else? We used to be the cheapest state. Now wey're running out at the pumps and people are getting into fist fights. How long before the administration does something about it?
What are other states dealing with as far as pricing and availability?

This state was cheap and now it is 2.94 for regular. The Beemer with it's diet of premium is staying parked except for a weekly run to keep things sorted.
I think we chose to move close to work at the right time.
This is going to affect the cost of food and plane tickets and everything else if it does not slow down a little bit. Twenty oil platforms in the gulf shut down by Katrina are not exactly our entire oil supply. The only way to stop things is not drive as much or use oil. I do need a big old gas hogging SUV though so this is going to make them depreciate like a motha. I just hope this passes before winter and does not affect heating oil prices for folks in dire need.

It jumped 60 cents a gallon here yesterday from the time I went to work in the morning to noon. I hear all the talking heads trying to explain, or rationalize, the immediate increase of gas that's already been produced and in the pumps but there's no logical explanation to it except for blatant profiteering.

We hit $3 here in Grants Pass, but then we have been about the highest in the state for a while now. Up in Salem area its still available at $2.49
What kills me is that everytinme anything happens, they tell us its going up, hell they admit it goes up at holidays and we know they are posting record profits,
whens that newly liberated Iraui oil getting here

$2.999 yesterday. $2.749 the day before and into last week. $2.299 to 2.399 last month. As far as I understand, 40% of crude oil refineries for gasoline production for the US are in areas hit by Katrina. Demand is far outpacing supply.
I'm trying to change my driving style and habits to reduce my trips to the pump even though my Toyota Corrola gets pretty good gas mileage...
Turning off the A/C...this is the hardest so far with the hot/humid summer we've been having up here...
Trying to keep my RPMs at 2000 or less when accelerating. I've never had a lead foot so this isn't too bad.
Not using the cruise control.
Not letting my tank get below 1/2. I get about 330 miles to a tank of gas. I've noticed 250 of them are out of the first half of the tank...then the needle drops like a rock.
Keeping up on my oil changes and engine mantenance.
Planning trips to coincide with other necessities...going out for everything at once vs. multiple trips.
With our vacation to TN next week, gas prices are probably going to keep us from doing a lot of things we were looking forward to doing while we we're there. Gas is going to be our bigest expense while we're there.

Gas prices were rising before Katrina hit, combine it with the long weekend and it just adds fuel to the fire, I guess. We haven't had the big daily price hikes like many areas, so I guess we can't complain too much. Cheapest I've seen is $2.67 cash price; that's up $.12 since last week.
What I found heartbreaking were the stories I heard on the news that said because Katrina hit at the end of the month, many people were unable to evacuate because they didn't have the $ for gas.

3.05 in upsatate ny some places as high as 6 a gallon for premi in Atlanta. The supply of oil has nothing to do with the current gas prices. Refineries across the globe are operating at 100% capicity to meet current demand shut down any one of those you will get a spike. Most econimist think the national average will be 4 dollars a gallon by the end of September.
the cost of everything is going to go up. The port in Lousianna is the largest seaport in the US. The disruption from Katrina is going to hit across the board.
Being in the Financial field I can tell you that commodity pricing on all most everthing has gone up coffee, wheat, gas , natural gas, ect ect ect.

My wife watched it go from 2.69- 2.99 in one jump yesterday. We have many stores totally out of gas right now. Most places in SC that still have fuel are 3.09- 3.19 for regular and up to 3.99 for super.
They say the pipeline that feeds our area isn't up and running due to a power failure but i think it's crazy.
I run a large service dept for a car dealership and it's killing business. Total sales are down 18% from the same month last year. If people can't drive em , why should they service them?
I feel like we are in a downward spiral toward another depression. This will effect everyone.

I just filled up with the middle grade for 2.88, premium is 2.99.
I'm planning on airing up my bike tires for this next semester. Also have a 1969 Vespa (200+ mpg) that may get some usage over the next few months.
