gas prices
Just wondering how raising gas prices are affecting everyone and what measures are we taking to save money?
In our house we've raised our setting on our a/c, raised the tank temp from 78 to 80, and reduced halides from 7 hours to 5 hours...hoping to keep my electric bill down (which in summer in FL is high!!)
I"m trying to drive less but thats almost impossible!
Just curious what everyone else is doing??
Our gas here is 3.56

Carpooling
Cancelled DirecTV (partly because I just can't pay for TV that I can receive for free)

yeah I was paying comcast 110.00 for cable
comcast 43.00 for internet
& bellsouth 45.00 for phone
_______
198.00 monthly
and all I watch is local stations but when I called and threatened to turn it all off comcast offered to give me all 3 services for 112.00 monthly so I did it. I drive 42 miles RT for work for 3.5 days - I think I'm going to propose working an hour later each of the 3 full days and not driving in for the half day.
Where are our truckers that were going to do a major strike???

We live close to work in a townhouse which makes so much sense. Even here folks want to move and have a 45 minute commute just like the big cities to have a mini mansion.
I can make it to work in seven minutes. The savings in maintenance, gas and depreciation is huge. I think I put only like 6500 miles on the Bimmer last year.
After we get married here in a month we are still going to move into a house with 3 bedrooms max, insulate well and not heat or cool the heck out of it. We could afford more, but it seems like a great time to live below our means and still eat well and hit the slopes or mountains every weekend.

Sounds like a great plan! We are looking at doing much the same when we move for my new job. No more than 3 miles to work. Any further and I'll only ride my bike to work.

Well, for one thing I'm driving a 24 year old car
My car does great on gas, but I'm riding the motorcycle as much as possilble and it pulls off 56 MPG. I'm also trying to work a bit of overtime, not eat out unless I really want to, and trying to go places with friends.
I'm doing my best to save as much money as possible too, because I see prices as only going up.

I try to run all my errands in the company car while I'm at work. This saves a ton in gas money. Mrs. Hop's car is pretty good on gas, so that really has not raised us more than $100 month despite the 56 mile round trip for her each day she works. The place we worked gave us a nice pay bump which helped and they are looking into carpooling for employees and providing company gas. We are at the center of the natural gas industry, so the economy here is thriving despite the problems in the rest of the country...

I spend 65 bucks a week on gas
Living in nashville I really need to get a hybrid
I live only 14 miles from work
but it takes 45 min to get to work because of traffic.
If you have a electric water heater that is one of the easiest ways to reduce your light bill.
2 things to do
1)make sure you drain and flush the heater once a year. this prevents mineral deposits improves water quality and improves heating
2) turn you water heater down 5 -10 degrees alot of water heaters are set at 140degrees well set it to 120
this can save you 10% off your light bill

never thought about the water heater temp -mine is electric though.
I do have a v8 but my SUV is pd off and it would cost me more monthly to trade for a more fuel efficient model than the cost of gas alone.
I spoke to some family in Nevada this morning and he said they are rationing rice sales. Is anyone else seeing that happen - we aren't here - yet!

According to Glenn Beck, the rice rationing has been over dramatized. Said that you can buy up to 4 , 20 pound bags at a time. According to the show, restaurant owners , etc. were attempting to buy much larger quantities.
Myself, I planted a larger garden this year and will be pressure canning most of the produce that we don't eat fresh. I also installed drip irrigation on the veggie and flower gardens.
I plan my shopping / whatever trips before or after work. No more running to town on a whim.
I've converted all my lighting to CF, although I really don't care for how my face looks at 5 am under flourescent light.
We've been blessed with pretty nice temps for the last month or so. My central hardly ever kicked on. My electric bill for last month was $48. I really hope that's not a mistake and I get zapped the next cycle.
