fuzzy black visitor!

So I get up this morning and look out at my bird feeder to see that the seed tray that "was" welded onto the pole is now twisted down and around. We have a squirrel feeder with a glass jar that holds corn, the jar is gone... and that fuzzy little *$&#@! smashed all over my little honeysuckle bush!!! I hope it doesn't die, I'll be bummed cuz it was a wedding gift. Maybe we should bring the deck box in for a while, since it's only a few feet from the feeders and full of seeds! I can't believe he didn't rip that apart, he had to have smelled the seeds, but maybe he was afraid to come onto the deck? I kinda doubt that tho... the grosbeaks were confused!
Oh, to detail, the first pic, you see the side of the bottom bracket, well you shouldn't, he pulled it all the way around, yesterday that bracket was facing straight towards the house! I can picture the bear just taking a paw and pulling it to where he wanted it... wish I could have watched!!!

Wow, crazy, so you had a bear come in and jack your corn? What do you do about that? Put everything higher?

With bears though, to get it high enough to be out of their reach you would have to get a ladder to fill it.

maybe add jalepeno seeds to the mix.... the birds wouldn't be effected, but the bear's mouth would be on fire.... That's what my mom does to keep the 10 lb squirrels out of the bird feeder at home.....

The store where I shop for seed has a picture of a small bear hanging upside down on a rope to reach a feeder. They are very clever (and destructive) when it comes to finding food.

I have only seen one rose breasted grosbeak in the four years I've been feeding birds.

on the bear, Jessica!

Agreed, Rick. Love that grosbeak. Haven't seen any around here, though.

I'll never forget the first time that a bear crossed my path. Backpacking in New Mexico one decided to pay us a visit in the middle of the night. Needless to say it was quite the hair raising experience.
