From the desk of the birthday monitor

I wish I could claim the following bit as my own writing, but it is that of a college friend. Michael posted this in our college buddy bulletin board. Read on...

"I find that too many people are reluctant to want for other people to celebrate their birthdays. They think it is too much of a gimme gimme celebration, or they just don't want people making a fuss. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I am here to tell you that those opinions do not count. Not a bit. For starters, the person having the birthday has very little if anything to do with it. The person's mother should be congratulated first of all. She is the one who had to carry you around for nine months and then push you out or have an operation, one or the other, or both. If you were a breach birth like me, you should send your poor mother two dozen roses for the double trouble she had because you decided to start out life in a contrary mood. Also, your birthday is not about you. It is all about us, your loved ones and friends, and completely for our benefit alone. It is the day that we, the ones who love you and care about you, take a moment to say, "I'm glad you're here. I cannot imagine what life would be like without you". You may get presents, but we take the greater pleasure in giving them. It is the day where it is your duty to graciously accept what we have to say on the matter, and then smile beatifically, no matter how many candles you may have, and no matter how embarassed you may be about the silly hat. It is our day because we love you and we want to show it. We may not always get the opportunity, so quit your griping, and give us our moment, before we can't have them any more. "

So good. So True!

Steve's birthday is Thurs and Trevor's is next month, and neither like celebrating or the attention! I just may have to give them this...and Trevor was 10 lbs, born at home!

Thanks, Cath!

Yep - he should! I had to exchange all his baby clothes. My midwife was excellent, preventing any damage or intervention to either of us. He easily looked a month old! (he was 2 wks late)

Well said. I remember a new friend (who is now my dearest) called me up on one of my kids birthdays to wish ME a happy birthday. I was bewildered and said "it's not my birthday. " She assured me it was and wished me a happy day since that was the day I gave birth. Little tokens of affection like that mean so much to me.
