I spend three to four hours a day commuting from La Mirada to my home in Colton 5 days a week. If it wasnt for my cell phone my kids would not be able to reach me if they needed me. Do I drive the whole time with it at my ear? No.
I drive AND talk on my cell phone all the time. I have had no accidents or tickets in YEARS - certainally long before I had a cell phone. People that get into accidents because they are talking on a cell phone probably drive like drooling idiots anyway. It has very little to do with putting a phone on your ear. If they werent concentrating on their phone they would be drifting off thinking of their hair appointment, playing with the stereo (CD's), or just mentally drifting in general.
I dont think its fair to place a generalization on people just because some can walk and chew gum at the same time. If you ban talking on the phone, you would also open the door to banning changing CD's while driving, smoking in your car, putting on makeup in the car, eating in the car, day-dreaming in the car..... the list is endless.
The best defense for driving with people that do other things in their cars other than drive.... is to watch out for them. I drive a small car and 'dodge the bullet' daily. You have to drive for yourself but also drive for THEM. Thats the only way to avoid getting ran flat anymore.
Besides..... isnt there something about NY drivers I heard once......??
