Florida people-- looking for info
Hi guys, hoping you can help here...
Long story but I'll cut to the chase. My mother's friend, Kay, lives in Naples, florida with her daughter and her daughter's family. A couple of years ago, Kay gave her daugther $50,000 to build an extention (granny suite) on the back of her house. Now the daughter wants Kay out (she's packing her mother's stuff when Kay isn't around), and giving her 1 month's notice to leave. They claim they'll only give her back the money if she leaves (they don't have it in any case) and Kay says she won't leave without the money.
Kicker is, Kay is 84 years old, that 50K is all she has, she's got a pacemaker, and now she's looking into subsidized housing which is all she can afford.
Kay needs legal advice but can't afford a lawyer, so I'm wondering if there are any organizations that could give her some advice. Daughter and her hubby are getting verbally abusive, are evesdropping on her phone conversations, making (so far) mild threats, and I think Kay is a little scared of them. The old girl (whom I've known since I was a kid) could use some back-up.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Yikes! That's horrible.
I'd start with AARP. They might be able to provide more advice. Also, in the blue pages (federal administration on aging) 800.677.1116 Might be able to point her in the right direction.

Also, a state agency: Adult Protective Services (also in the blue pages under state government) 813.233.3260 (She'll need to look up the local number for Naples.

Thanks for the info, Greg. I'll pass it along. It's a sad situation.

That truly is sad, Cherry. I know Kay could surely use the money and I hate to see family at such odds but you know what? Kay is probably better off without them, even if it means losing the money. I hope that she finds a decent place to live, has great neighbors and makes new friends.

Yeah, I think she'll be happier in a seniors residence of some kind. She doesn't need all this turmoil at this point in her life.

Well, there's no paperwork except cancelled cheques and the addition on the house. That's was why we were thinking she needed some advice on how to proceed.
