Every reefer needs a website

SO WHAT YOU NEED IS A WEB SITE OF YOUR OWN...

The World Wide Web is a rich library of reef keeping information. The single healthiest thing a hobbyist can do is equip themselves with as much information from as broad a spectrum of sources as possible. the interest is out there, my site has traffic in excess of 10,000 visitors a day. We (reef tank owners) have the opportunity to be a driving force in that information flow. If we EACH had a site that was linked to others sites, we could be one of the best networks that the hobby has. We could be a force that help to shape and protect this hobby.

We each need a web site… (don't be afraid) I have built a step by step plan for the construction of a personal web site that will cost the owner NOTHING. You will not have to go out and buy a pocket protector and join the local geek club. ANYONE CAN DO THIS.

There are many no cost web-hosting companies that give you a free URL and a free site in exchange for a popup or banner ad that they control. The Url they give you is like this http://aquariareview.tripod.com. This is called a second level address. I had my site on this kind of URL for a year before my traffic got so strong that I wanted to control my own ads. Thats when I decided to buy a top level URL. If you go to that old address you will find a button to redirect you to my new address. This is a very good deal:They get to sell the ad, you get the url and site, cost free. They don’t sell adult ads so your site will be family friendly.

Once you know how to do this you can have as many sites as you want. I have a family site because my family lives all over the world. we use it to stay in touch with pictures and news. Check it out. my family site

All you will need is access to a digital camera to shoot your pictures. If you dont have one I think that if you post a help request, someone in the group who lives near you will come over and shoot some pics for you. (we have some really great photographers in this hobby)

I think that this is an important idea.
If there are questions that you want me to answer, post them here and I will try to answer them (it will also help me to know what you need to know) . I would be willing to do small clinics at my home (5-6 people at a time ) to help some of the more cyber challenged among us.

Here is the address to the complete instructions INSTRUCTIONS INSTRUCTIONS

I made one on my own.
Not reef related, just another hobby...It's in spanish though
I was thinking of making an english version, but I'm working on a major upgrade of the website, so it'll take time...

Check it out: chaguaramas.tripod.com.ve

The only recomendation I would make would to either eliminate the lousy pop up windows or be curtious enough to warn people about them when you post a link somewhere. Sorry but one (let alone multiple) pop up windows are a PITA and not warning someone before you send them to your site is rude.

If anyone is interested in some web space here on TRT, please just let me know. I can give you 10MB of space for no cost with no banner ads! This is plenty of space for a simple site. You can either point your own domain here or have your site called, for example http://mybigtank.thereeftank.com

I just ask that you at least have Senior Member status or have been a member here for more than 6 months.

Thanks-
Brooke

I think that is a very generous offer to the members. I so believe in sharing information as a way of build the hobby.

I am new to this group but I would be willing to help anyone who wants to do this and doesnt know how. Building a web site is not as hard as many think.
