DVI vs Analog monitor cables question
This should be easy...
My LCD monitor accepts analog or DVI cables.
My new computer is DVI only out to monitor.
I already have lots of analog - DVI adapters to run cabling to the monitor either way.
(My video editing computer is connected to this same monitor with a DVI cable, no adapters)
Now... is it the SAME signal quality if I stick a DVI adapter on EACH end of an analog monitor cable to connect this new computer? Or should I just buy a new DVI cable? (DVD Video, TV tuner output to same monitor, Photoshop work, etc is use of new computer)
Thanks!

There could be some signal loss with the adapter, but probally not enough to notice with the naked eye, But I would just get the new cable. DVI's arent too expansive...

But does the adapter "preserve" the signal during conversion? or is there no such thing as "conversion" and thus no need for the true DVI cable?

Depends on the adapter if it converts it to analog the there will be a noticable difference.

I'm not a tech expert but...
DVI uses 34 pins and PC-VGA uses only 15 pins so I would think there would be some loss.

in the end it depends on what card and monitor you are using... if the card is top of the line then i would say it is time to upgrade your screen. I have seen both color and clarity loss by using an adapter.

There is always some loss using adapters.

since her monitor accepts both VGA and DIV I'd say is fairly up to date but she is using 15 pin VGA cables with DVI adapters on both ends. I'd say there would be some loss.

OK... Thanks -- I'll rephrase the question....
Is there a benefit to using a DVI monitor cable rather than an analog VGA monitor cable?
Is the digital data arriving in the same quality as the analog data? (leave out the variable of adapters)

DVI is better IMO.

Thanks!
I called dcables.net -- they said that the DVI would be better than the vga or the adapter... BUT that DVI-D is best, -- better than DVI-I. You can run DVI-D to DVI-I, but NOT to VGA as there is no VGA adapter for the DVI-D. My computer and monitor are both DVI-I, but a DVI-D cable will work, and give better refresh rate than DVI-I VGA. DVI-I sends analog and digital, evidently, whereas DVI-D is digital only (I'm a little vague on that)
So, I'll use the setup I have, and order a DVI-D cable sometime ... the online prices are vastly cheaper than Staples or Best Buy, btw.
The noticeable difference will be small... regardless.

Hi there, Doug! How've you been?
The bluebirds have returned, and hopefully spring is right around the corner...
(I must ask, as a search has turned up nothing... who is Keri Cantrell?)
