Dog training

Well along with Mrs Phish came a dog. It is a terrier mix that ditched her and now I have a new tag-along.

Aside from "sit pretty" (for food) the dog is pretty much an eating and pottying machine.

Have any of you done the Uncle Matty program and does it work. My buddy up in Idaho is keeping an Aussie Shephard for me to pick up but I don't want to write off this poor little girl dog. I had an Aussie (think frisbee dog) before but dont want to show favoritism.

I used the Junkzoo training program. Casey (the dog not the mod) is well trained all from what I learned from Jeff.

Do you think we could teach him to clean the pool after he swims? How much hair can one dog possibly lose at one time? I swear you would think the dog would be bald by now.

I trained Buzz the English Pointer Lab mix all by myself. He fetches great. He fetches things like kids toys, drip irrigation line, the stuffing out of our patio swing, the catch bag off of the mower, the gas line on my grill,my wifes bulbs (as soon as they bloom), latice, garden hose (3), and other great dog training aids! Gotta love pups!

I know he's not. He'll be swimming then jump out, go whiz in the back yard then come jump back in. He swallows a lot of water trying to swim with a tennis ball in his mouth so he has to go a lot.

So if the dog goes poo in the house does that count for a treat? Blitz seems to think it is the action without regard to the location.

Perry,

Do a search in this forum for "dog" and look for threads by RickO. Shirley and Junkzoo have given Rick some good tips and techniques for Casey (the dog) over the last year and a half (I think it's been that long!)

They gave up on Casey the Mod though.

No Way, No How,,,,for a treat,,unless you want it to be OK,,,
If you catch ol Blitz in the act, a firm NO, and escort (i assume) him outside, and try to wait him out so he could possibly finish his biz,,,if you caught him in mid "biz"
If you catch it after the fact, just a lil scolding might work, but he'd forgotten why you are scolding ,if some time has past since the discovery,,,
Best thing to do is to watch for signs that he's gotta go, try to set up a daily routine,(first thing in the morning,a set time later during the day, after eating, last thing at night etc.)
dunno the age , or how long you've had him(still, assuming it's a HE) a lotta pups and young dogs like to run and play while taken outside,,,avoid any playtime action TIL the dog has done his thing.just stand out there, watch him, and praise him after his duty occurs(you want to tell him , "go potty" or the like to let him learn that he is expected to perform),,for a while in the beginning, after the wanted action from him is done, take him right back inside(after praise), cuz you want to teach him that when you let him outside, he's supposed to go,,,,
My cousin the dog trainer, at times for some of the boarded dogs will use,
(the following might gross some people out) when a dog does not go, and he knows it's gotta go(new place/shy thing) he will insert a single match from the box of matches -type match ummmm,in the "under the tail "place.
this threw me when i saw this at first,,,but what happens is the sulfur from the match will slighty irritate the dog's (ummm you know ) and the dog will try to "remove" the irritation,by ,you quessed it ,,,elimination,,,
I quess this is a common "trick" used by many,,,it seems strange until you are waiting for a dog to go,,and try it,,,
crazy as it sounds,,,it works,,,only offered this to you in case you need to put it to use, to get the desired effect with out waiting forever outside...
My other cousin, the Police K9 officer, along with many other officers have their K9's trained to "go" only on command , when let ouside the patrol car.
Again, never thought to why,,,but it makes sense not to have your K9 doing his thing as soon as he gets out,,,or on another patrol car(dog smell)
or while he's getting ready to catch the bad guy/do a search etc.
He/they use the command "Break",,,

Sorry for the long story,,,but back to the" in the house "stuff, after clean up, you want to use a enzyme type cleaner to clean the area where the accident happened,,, if you don't the dog will still smell the area ,and thinkof it as a ok place to go, since he's done it b4,,sorta like dogs that do in the same area outside,,,. the enzyme cleaner will eradicate lingering odors that would stick around , even tho you think you cleaned well,,,'member they have better noses than us. A good brand of cleaner ,available at most pet shops is "Natures Miracle",,works great for most smell /odors/ accidents , pet or human.
other than spot cleaning , this works well in carpet cleaners for odor control of most everything,,,,most any other kind of cleaner might mask(to us) the smell, but dogs will smell the area like no-ones business(you ain't fooling Ol Blitz)
Again sorry for the long post/story, hope this shed (pun intended Rick) some light on your question,,Perry.
any thing else anyone wants to know, I'll try to offer my opinion...
Here's something to ponder:
What is the same thing agreed on when you put three dog trainers together?
" Any two of them agree the third is doing it wrong"
aren't you sorry you asked by now? LOL
