Dog question
My female dog is having her first period at this time and I was wondering how often will she have it and what the right age to get her fix is. she is only 8-9 months old so she is still a puppy in my eyes.
Can someone help me here?

I think usually you want to get her spay before her first estrus cycle. I waited a little too long with my dog, and got her spayed soon after she was done with her cycle. I think it occurs twice a year. Dealing with her first cycle was messy on the carpet and I didn't want to deal with it again.

Many Vets and animal shelters spay at 8 weeks. As soon as her heat is over I would take her in. The sooner it is done the less risk of mammary cancer when she gets older
*disclaimer There may be new research available I am relying on my memory to recall info from 10 years ago

Dobe is correct. We got a new dog last Christmas from Santa, and our vet said to have him fixed at 12 weeks.

I'm waiting for my Roxy (AKC Yellow Labrador Retriever) to come into her 4th season to breed her. Have her hips certified and am waiting for puppies.

hey luey, we just had our female spayed, we were pushing it with her first cycle, but the doc said we can have her fixed while she is bleeding, but she will just continue to bleed, so you can go ahead and do it now if you want, i dont think you have to wait, but it wont stop the cycle.

She is very smart, and she likes to play at all times, loves chasing a ball and she is my jogging partner, I really enjoy having her around.
