it is prolly just hot spots. due to the matting. Fezzik gets these on occasion. imagine that. once the air can get down to the skin they will go away in a couple of days.

Casey, ditto on the other posts,Bag Balm/Corona(the salve, not the beer ) on the area might help a bit,
down side is,with a long coat like that, it might make a bit of a mess to the surrounding coat,,,
LPS(local pet shop) might have a spray to soothe "hot spots" or dry skin.
with a prev. matted area, a bath /conditioner might be in order, the skin under the mat was without air circ. ,and prob got damp, and skin oils built up,
and possibly mixed with dead skin/dirt to irritate the skin , like you have now,,,
if you don't bathe/groom your pooch yourself, and take it to a groomer,,,,let them know what the area was caused by, and they oughta fix you up .
BTW: Cute Pooch!

I agree Jeff. We have certainly had a lot of dog posts here lately. We are fortunate to have you here to answer our questions.

Now for my question. I had a Bassett Hound several years ago. Is there ANY way to make them NOT stink?! We could give her a bath and she would smell again within an hour! She was a sweet dog and was very healthy, but we couldn't stand to have her in the house longer than an hour after each bath. She farted every time she barked, so maybe that had something to do with it. Any information on this? I don't have any plans for another Bassett anytime soon, but I would like your insight into this phenomenon.

Andrew

Bassetts are adorable, but I've never known one that didn't..um..stink.

sometimes wiping them down with witch hazel after a bath helps...sorta like an after shave treatment.

Also, keeping their ears super clean way deep inside...lots of Q-tips...helps a lot.

Hehe. It may be funny but it is true. I did a search on google on "Bassett Hound & Stink" and came up with a lot of hits. I thought this one was pretty funny. I bolded the Bassett and the two kinds of dogs that I have now. It is pretty accurate!

HOW MANY DOGS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?

GOLDEN RETRIEVER:

The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

BORDER COLLIE:

Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

DACHSHUND:

You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

ROTTWEILER:

Make me.

SIBERIAN HUSKY:

Is this the Iditarod yet? Just let me out for a minute. I promise I won't run away.

LAB:

Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?

BASSETT HOUND:

Do you have to look up or move to do that? I'll just sit here and foul the carpet while you handle all this. Nobody expects me to do much but stink and pee, anyway.

GERMAN SHEPHERD:

I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check
to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

BOXER:

Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.

JACK RUSSELL TERRIER:

I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

POODLE:

I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

COCKER SPANIEL:

Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

DOBERMAN:

While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.

CHOW:

Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark......then bite your face off when you least expect it.

CHIHUAHUA:

Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

POINTER:

I see it, there it is, there it is, right there....

GREYHOUND:

It isn't moving. Who cares?

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD:

First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

OLD ENGLISH SHEEP DOG:

Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb?

HOUND DOG:

ZZZZZZzzzzz.z.z.z..z..z..z...z

CAT:

Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the
question is: How long will it be before I can expect some light?

LOL Andrew , on both ,your Bassett and light bulb post,,,,
on the Bassett, looks like the odor is both from inside , and out,,,
outside: Lambert Kay makes a good shampoo ,"Fresh and Clean"
,and a conditioner to go along with it too,,,,
either that brand or something along the lines of a deep cleaning or skin problem type shampoo
L-K also makes a nice pet "Cologne" that works well,,

inside: mebbe a change in food,,,are you using any kind of canned food at all? IMO canned food is not needed for dogs,a lot of dry foods out there that are just fine for dogs now,,,
more on the inside eminating odors, they have intestinal "purifiers" out that clean up a dog from the inside out, if what he leaves in the grass for you smells to high heaven, this stuff will help with that and the gassy side effects,,,,
not sure of the name,,,but Dr.Foster and Smith would be a place i would say to check out,,,
