Computer troubles. Need help please.
HELP!
I'm no expert so I'll try to give an accurate description of the problem.
Starting about three weeks ago my internet browsing became very slow. I have DSL with Mindspring (Earthlink) but it's now slower than dialup used to be. Also my Earthlink software is locking up about every 10 minutes. When this happens I have to reboot the computer to get things working again.
I've done the only things I know to do which is scan for viruses (none found) and I completely uninstalled the Earthlink software and reloaded a newer version. No change.
I have recently noticed that if I'm using Windows Media Player to listen to music it occasionally has to pause to read the hard drive. This occurs even when I'm not on the internet. This is a new problem, before it was seamless even if I was doing other things simultaniously. This leads me to think I might be having some kind of hardware issue. About a year ago I upgraded to 512 M of ram but the system acts just like it's low on ram. If I go into the control panel and check system performance it still shows 511 M of ram. Is it possible the the ram is not working properly?
Please help. This is driving me crazy.

Did you do the obvious stuff. Unplug your DSL modem for 15 seconds and plug it back in then restart your comp. Also, defrag and go to internet options and delete any files taking up space. You can call the DSL provider as well and have them ping you and see if the connection is good.
Try that and then the nerds here on TRT will help you out if it is your box.

clear out your internet temp files, delete your cookies, and remove the unsed icons from your desktop, this should help out!
also do a hard drive search for "*.tmp", you may have hundreds of these files. all they do is eat memory.
hth!

I've deleted my temp internet files. I haven't unplugged the modem but I have turned it off (all day). I'll try unplugging and replugging.
The thing that throws me is the Windows Media Player not working properly now, even when I'm offline.

its spyware!!! download ad-aware and boot up in safe mode by restarting the computer. while its booting up (during the black screen) press f8 over and over till you get the menu. choose safe mode (should be the one on the top). wait for it to boot up then run ad aware and delete everyhting it finds!!! that will take care of it

I cannot recommend one piece of software enough. It is called Pest Patrol and you can download it. My CEO's wife had over 4000 trojans, hijackers, keyloggers and other stuff on her computer. I bought it for about 30 bucks based on the recommendation of the computer nerds at work and had almost 600 pests including one that would not let me log into Yahoo.
Update the program weekly and keep your system squeaky clean.

Since my last post I have downloaded and ran SpyBot S&D and Ad-Aware. I found and deleted tons of spyware, I was shocked to see how much there was. Unfortunately that didn't fix my problem though.

i would call your ISP and have them ping your line to check for problems. also ask them is anone else in your area has called in regarding the same problem. your computer will run a little slower online for a bit as now your pages will have to load form the net and not your temp folder on your HD. another thing to do is block all cookies and have it prompt you when you are receiving them. that way you can controle what web sights you trust and what ones you dont.(right cloick on the IE icon to do this and go to internet options) give it some time and call your isp. im sure they can help ya.
