Computer problem: Internal CD-DVD and USB ports
Hello,
PC running XP Professional:
Recently my USB ports on the front and rear of my computer have been recognizing only a small number of peripherals, and now they are only recognizing the mouse and keyboard, and none of the three printers, scanner, cam. card, or the multi-port USB hubs that used to be attached...
There is one USB port in the Device Manager USB controllers that is an "unknown device" once I plug anything in to any of the ports. There are four USB Root Hubs that remain unaffected, but none are working other than for the wireless mouse and the keyboard.
Also, each time I boot up I get the message that the I-EEE 1284.4-1999 network driver (windows) is not working properly... I'm on the network of home computers no problem.
I was loading software (just recently formatted) for two days using the CD/DVD-RW drive... and now it "works", but doesn't recognize anything I insert... just adds "CD" to the drive letter instead of the name of the program, and calls it "CD" whether it's a CD or a DVD, and claims "0" bytes when explored.
Any clue what's going on here? Or how to rectify the problems?
Thank you~!
Shirley

Oh THANK YOU JEFF! I'm to the point of calling to see if I can "take it in" today... so maybe your friend or someone here will have a fix I can do myself.
The USB port problem has been random and intermittant for awhile... but now they are inoperable... and I've never had the CD/DVD problem before, and the format didn't do it.. it was loading everything just fine... then suddenly stopped recognizing what is put into it.

Were you having problems before the format? What were they? By any chance is the clock gaining or losing time?

The clock is fine, the CD/DVD drive was fine for two days after the format, and the USB ports were intermittently not recognizing various peripherals. They only continuously fail to work post-format, but the mouse USB works, and for a bit, one of the printers worked... but not long enough to install it.
Everything is running much faster.

Sounds like a driver issue.
Go into device manager, delete all usb items and any unknown devices. Reboot the machine and let Windows refind all of these items.

The four that are there all "work". The Unknown one shows up after I plug anything into any of the 6 ports that came with the computer. I've had Windows find the driver, and it comes up with nothing...

Windows will do some strange things sometimes. Without actually seeing the machine it is hard to diagnose. I've been doing PC Maintenance since for 15 years. First thing I would do is what I stated above.

OK -- I'll do that. And I'll let you know.
I called Best Buy ( ) and they quoted $69 to tell me what's wrong, that does not come off the "fix it" price, and then they said they have no idea what it might cost to fix the USB ports, for instance, and if they need "replacing" they have to send the tower out. I'm not going that route.

Are you saying "uninstall" the following:
Under Universal Ser5ial Bus controllers:
3 of these:
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controllers
1 of this:
SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
and 4 of these:
USB Root Hub
The above all claim to be working fine. The "unknown device" isn't there now b/c I removed the USB cable to the peripheral... and when it's there, it says there's no driver, even though I installed the printer drivers already to the print cables.
THANKS!

I also get this message upon booting up:
IEEE-1284.4-1999 Network Driver (Windows) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
There's nothing wrong indicated in Device Mgr, however, and the computer is seen on the network just fine.

Start here and if the error below still exists delete it as well. Even remove the usb items that show good. Reboot and see what you get.

OK -- I did that. Then the computer found it and reinstalled it. I connected the scanner (software already installed for it) and it did what it has been doing: Found new hardware followed by Hardware installed and ready to use (real quick b/c it is already installed) and then I get happy for 5 seconds, then Unknown Device.

Had to take daughter to dentist.
So we are right back where we started.
The next easy thing to check is connector to the motherboard. REMOVE POWER! Remove the connector from the mother board and then reinstall the connector.
After this, without seeing the machine it is almost impossible to diagnose. Let me know.

I forgot something else to check.
Since you are not seeing your cd drive properly you could have a IDE issue. Go to the pc manufacturers site and check for drivers there. Download and install any ide, bus or systems drivers they have available.
