Computer Help Needed Pls: CD-RW No Power...not recognized

Hello,
My computer stopped recognizing that I have a CD-RW installed. It's not listed in Device Manager, either.

I took the side panel off the computer (7-yr-old Gateway, 1-1/2 yr old Philips CD-RW) and reseated everything related to the CD ROM. The electrical power connection was reseated. When I boot up, no lights appear on the CD-RW and the tray will not open. Everything else is receiving power, however.

So, do I need a new CD-RW or could it be something has gone on on my computer, such as just that part of the power harness?

Thanks so much!!

Shirley

It may be just a loose wire. Try unplugging the power and plugging it back in and see if that helps.

I pulled the power plug out and put it back in, the one that goes into the back of the CD-RW...It didn't make any difference...

Are their any other power plugs free that you could plug in to the cdrw to make sure that power adapter that is plugged into the cdrw didn't go bad..

Hi Dmet,
I tried that a couple hours ago and it still didn't work.

There's a power plug coming out of the one going into the CD-RW and it goes into the floppy drive, which works. I pulled it from the CD-RW, plugged in a spare in its place, left the plug in the floppy drive, and powered up. No power to the CD-RW, but floppy drive still worked.
Then I put it back like it was.

On another observation:

The USB cable connecting the Arhcos Jukebox was pulled before properly shutting off the Archos, and the computer shut down and booted into Safe Mode. Oddly enough, the Device Manager actually listed the CD-RW correctly at the point - Philips 800 series - but no power. I rebooted and it went into Windows correctly, and Dev. Mgr. no longer listed the CD-RW.

Thanks again...it's sitting here running with the side panel off in the meantime.

Shirley

Have you tried plugging another drive (floppy drive) into the same power connector? What size is your power supply? If another drive works on the smae power plug, then the CD-RW may be the problem.

Hi Johnny,
Thanks for the Website...I tried all that before posting..When I do a reinstall hardware, it can't find the hardware to install. When I read about Philips CD-RWs on the 'net at various discussion sites, they were spoken of as though they were right there beside Rio pumps and pwr heads! And, that tech support was non-existant, which it is. I went to the Philips site, and rather than post drivers to re-install, they only post a manual.

I have the manual that came with it. Why I can't find the driver s/w is beyond me, b/c I always keep that stuff. I reformatted the computer last July, so I either got this running w/o the s/w, or I had the s/w then and have somehow lost it.

Andrew...I don't have a nother floppy to plug in, but the little set of wires that split off from the CD-RW power connection work.

I think I'll try a new one when I make it to stores and see what happens.

Thanks for your time and help,
Shirley

Bummer, its begining to sound like the CD/R might have gone bad, no power and the OS not seeing it. At least like most electronics they have come down in price, I really need to get one

Hmmm.

Doug, a cd-rom, and a hammer..... Memories rushing back....

I'm quite certain you shouldn't take Doug's advice on this one.

Update:
The new CD-RW works fine.
It was also only $29.95 w/$50 rebate.
