computer help again
okay this time it is not mine..
a freind of mine got a gateway computer second hand. gave her xp home to put on it, she does not have any real memory on it, many 16 gigs total with 6 gigs workable now.
she does not have word or any of the office programs on it, i forgot that xp home does not have that, so i gave her mine copy of the student vers. of office. tried to reg. it but it would not take sincei already have reqistered it. shenow has 45 more times until it locks out..
question is .. what are my options, her buying office is not something she can do.
can i type in my name to reqister it? willit take it again?
any one got a office software they can send me that does not have to be registered the computer is a gateway..
i will check withthe IT dept . at work , they usally toss all the software things that come withthe desktops..

Just reformat the computer then install office without registering. Thats the easiest/fastest/cheapest way.
It's only illegal if you actually do it, whereas this is all hypothetical

i second the vote for open office, the best of the best. I got all my family using it instead of them shelling out more for stuff windows should do anyway.

MS, new update system catches bootleg, unregistered, ETC copies of all products, this started 3 weeks ago, when you use auto update or just try to update it verifies the copy on your computer, if it is not authentic and reg. to that machine it locks. You should get a popup giving you the options.
Option one: if if you paid for it send them the recipt of where you got it and they will sell you a real version for half price.
option two: no recipt pay full price.
Option three: reformat reload DO NOT reg. and "DO NOT TRY TO UPDATE" turn it off. and you'll be fine. I would install SP2 from disk to protect the machine as much as you can.

If memory serves, trying to run XP on 16 megs of RAM isnt going to work
I think it needs 256 min but 512 is better

You could try the 2.0 beta release, but it may not be stable yet. Hence the beta tag. If you have problems use the latest stable, 1.4 I believe.
