Huge Avalanche Buries Cars in Colorado
-
Saturday, January 6, 2007

(01-06) 11:54 PST DENVER (AP) --

A huge avalanche buried cars Saturday and may have pushed others over the edge Saturday on U.S. 40 near 11,307-foot-high Berthoud Pass, Colorado highway officials said.

"Our crews said it was the largest they have ever seen. It took three paths," said Stacey Stegman, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Seven people had been rescued and one was taken to a hospital, Stegman said.

The slide buried at least two cars, state Patrolman Eric Wynn told CNN.

Crews were probing the area for other vehicles, including any that may have gone off the road, Stegman said.

The avalanche was described as 100 feet wide and 15 feet deep.

The area usually has slides 2 to 3 feet deep, Stegman told CNN. "This is a tremendous amount of snow to come down the mountain for us," she said.

Three snow storms in as many weeks have dumped more than 4 feet of snow on parts of Colorado.

Berthoud Pass is the main route to Winter Park, one of Colorado's largest ski areas.

Stegman said the late-morning timing meant most traffic headed to the ski area had already passed. "If it would've happened just a couple of hours earlier, this would've been a very different situation," she told CNN.

We are only getting 6" to a foot each storm, but I was the TRT man on the scene for two blizzards and a 70mph blowing storm on black ice that jackknifed trucks all over. My rear wheel drive car with 4" of ground clearance was the vehicle of choice of course...traction control and snow tires are something but eventually it comes down to knowing to drive. Those 7500 total miles spent courting were pure winter combat duty.

The avalanche was not near us, and we seem to be in the banana belt here in Colorado Springs. Trinidad and other areas got four feet of snow, then it got worse later. They are still digging out the avalanche and the national guard is dropping hay and guys down to chip 8" inches of ice off the watering holes.

It looks like the bad weather is over for a while. Everyone got out ok from the avalanche, but the news is full of stories about buying a transponder for outdoor activities and things like that.

A couple of inches Friday is it on the horizon.

snow for us by tonight... comes down to the laws of nature. I live in the NW so i don't complain when it rains, if you live in tornado alley then don't complain when your house is spread over 4 counties. gotta choose where you live and then take your licks for living there.
