That is true and they do get hot out of gas and to change the fuel fiter, because a half cloged filter makes the pump work harder and mite make it sound louder.

Hello, 98% its your fuel pump. Most likely the noise is being caused by the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel pump module. I know that Saturn was having a problem with this on their 2003 ions with VIN numbers up to 3z149949. Take it to the dealer and tell them you think it is the T.S.B. 03-06-04-024A posted november '03 (assuming you still are under warranty). If not, you will need to replace the fuel pump module.

Thanks Fish Fry! I am still in warranty! You bet I'll mention that. The VIN on my Ion is 3Z106323.
All of you guys have been very helpful! Plus, this was a fun thread, too.

Update - at Saturn dealership now. They said that the fuel pump didn't seem to be an urgent problem. They compaired the noise of my car to another, and that mine was noisier. Told me they had to drain out the fuel (??) to check it. But they are ordering a new one for me anyway. The part should be here in a week.
Thanks for the jibs and jabs, guys

Glad you took it there and got things moving. I thought Saturn was supposed to be the Japanese car equivalent if you believe the hype, but seems like just another GM car.
Next time you get a car let's get you a Camry. I know you are a librarian and should get a white one, but show us your wild streak and go red or dark green if you like.

heh! A white car?? No way, Perry. Actually, my Ion is a stylish black with a spoiler
A new car is way far away...but I would probably look at a hybrid Honda, in deep red perhaps
Oh, and ask Tom about how good the Saturn design is. When I helped the Wyatts move, my car got bumped by the moving van ( ) while in the driveway, and nary a dent or scratch

Cath meant to say that her car was MOVED sideways by a low speed impact of the unoccupied truck by about 6 or 8 inches (as measured by the black mark the tires left when being moved) without leaving a scratch.
I was both impressed and relieved, as the truck was going it's way down hill (evidently without satisfactory parking brakes...) san driver after we had only unloaded half the truck...
