yeah, the natural disasters in america these last few years have been horrible. We're in a severe drought here in the TN Valley area and have some fires going on too.

I'm in Orange County and it's pretty nuts out here. The fire came within a few miles of my house, and my inlaws within a few hundred yards. The wind is dying down now, so they'll be able to get it under control starting tomorrow. I was evacuated in the 2003 fires, where the fire burned 260 degrees around my place, so my heart goes out to all those who've lost and are in fear of losing their homes. The sad thing is, we're pretty used to it. It happens almost every year. Arsonists sit in the waiting for perfect conditions (which are too readily available in this region), and then light up the southland. Such a shame. Thanks for your wishes/prayers.... we need em.

yah, the air quality out here is horrible at the moment. There were 3 major fires going on at once where i live, and one came up right up to my friends back yard then burned itself out.

I'll second that air quality. My wife was so ill from the constant sneezing/allergies that she came home from work early. Fires from Santa Clarita all the way to the border... think about it, that's about a 150 mile stretch of fires! I hope today things turn around, now that the wind is dying.

Things are better here in Fillmore at the head of the "Ranch" fire. Smoke isnt as bad as yesterday. You can see fire at the top of the highest peak behind the town. They have relaxed evacuation orders for those around the outer rim of town.
San Diego has it the worst. Conflicting reports put the home losses at between 750 and 1000 homes. I have friends down there and they dont know if their house is still standing or not.
If you are one of those 500k people evacuated down there, I wish you only the best.

I've heard as many as 1200 destroyed.... but whatever the total at the moment, it's one major catastrophe.

The fires are possibly the work of arsonists, not natural disasters. Anywho I hope the people of CA get a break soon.

I have been breathing smoke and sucking in bits of ash on and off since Sunday
I am in Costa Mesa and for a while it felt like a new fire every day. There is smoke every day somewhere and one night the moon was red. It is really eerie. The air quality is horrible. My friend has high blood pressure and may have to go to the hospital to have it managed because the air in the house is not clean enough and she has been really sick. News is there is a wind shift tonight and is moving the fires at least away from us, but I dont know what that means for the big picture.

Wind shift should be good as it causes the fire to burn back on itself, however it will also allow for the fire to burn in new directions. It won't spread as quickly or burn as intensely, but it may endanger areas that were previously in the clear.
The idea about Al Queda starting the fires has been determined to be a mistake. Fox News mistakenly reported a 4 year old e-mail threat as current news. Ooops!
Now that we have discredited the media... reports are that only one of the fires is currently believed to be arson. This will probably change as time goes on, but the rest of the fires (according to the media) have been a result of powerlines falling/arcing due to the powerful Santa Ana winds and flying embers from the fires traveling up to 3-5 miles and starting new fires.
My best man lives in one of the hardest hit neighborhoods in Rancho Bernardo (San Diego suburb) where 100's of houses have burned down. He's still not sure if his house is there or not but it has been confirmed that many houses (one of them only 4 doors down) have burned to the ground around his. If anyone is curious, local maps and information about the fires, evacuations, and confirmed addresses of destroyed houses can be found at www.cbs8.com.
Wish I was down there helping out but it was my turn to stay behind and cover the city while about a dozen of my co-workers headed south to fight some fire...
